Not to mention AC traction. 91s were super-advanced but the were the last DC-motored, I believe.
This previous topic should be of relevance. To be honest, most of the time I suppose it is easier to buy new rather than rebuild an existing locomotive. Perhaps that is why 66s were built in the end, instead of more 57s. A new build might have been considered around the time when 43 HST life-extension had been proposed.
