Gromit 'grand trail' for Bristol Children's hospital

Gromit 'grand trail' for Bristol Children's hospital

A "grand trail" of 60 Gromit statues are to grace the streets of Bristol for 10 weeks next summer.

The five-foot tall (1.5m) models of the Oscar-winning animated characters will be painted by artists to raise cash for the Wallace and Gromit's Grand Appeal.

It aims to raise funds for Bristol's Children's Hospital through sponsorship and a charity auction afterwards.

Wallace and Gromit creator Nick Park said he was very pleased with the end result.

"They were made surprisingly quickly and I'm very particular exactly how Gromit looks and that he's in character," he said.

"The guy that did it made the original sculpture from the clay models in polystyrene and then a mould was made, and now they've been cast in fibreglass." (read more)
A nice touch, I think, that showcases one of the best and most-loved things to have come out of the city in recent decades. And for a very worthy cause as well. I hope I get to see them!

I hope the mods don't mind me reviving this topic, but I thought that you all might like to know that Gromit Unleashed (as the project is now known) commences today, and will last for ten weeks. There are now 80 Gromits, not 60, although sadly two have have vandalised in separate attacks (:() - one on College Green and the other at the Spyglass Restaurant on Welsh Back, near Victoria Street, leaving 78.

To take part in the Trail, one should visit any of six "Passport Stops" across the area, to claim a "passport" on which you can collect stamps which show you have found a Gromit. More information on this can be found on the Gromit Unleashed website, and from the Trail Map.

Not every Gromit is in the City Centre though - only roughly two in three can be found there. Others can be found at, among other locations, Cribbs Causeway shopping centre, Lawrence Hill bridge, Gloucestershire County Cricket Club, Bristol Airport and Cheddar Gorge; there is even one at Paddington station (designed by Aardman themselves)!

I had been hoping to see all 80 but I'm somewhat less optimistic now, so I'll be happy with 60.

'Twas a lot of fun, exploring parts of Bristol I've never visited in the hope of finding Gromit today :) I think I've found about 12 so far, with another 40-ish in the City Centre in various locations. (I only visited the Harbourside area for today's first run; I'll be doing a more serious Gromit Hunt later in the week.)

Surely they're better off placed in Preston, after all, Nick Park did live in Preston.
I might look at doing this or making my own hunt like this. It looks very fun!
