I've had cause to use the EMT Liverpool - Norwich service a couple of times this week. Not the whole way (!) but from Peterborough to Ely. My question is do EMT have drivers & conductors based at Liverpool or do the trains start elsewhere early in the morning ?

They are based in Nottingham, so run empty from Nottingham to Liverpool (avoiding Sheffield) at something like four in the morning.

No conductors or drivers based at Liverpool for EMT AFAIK, the first Norwich service from Liverpool in the morning is formed by a empty stock move from Nottingham.

EMT have no train crew based at Liverpool so they are worked by Nottingham crews West of there.

The first two services of the day are formed of a pair of trains and crew that start their day in Nottingham, these trains go to Liverpool empty as train 5M06 (with 4 units coupled together as an 8-coach train), where they split and the front two units (i.e. farthest from the gateline at Liverpool Lime Street) work the 06:47 to Norwich, and the rear two units work the 07:43 to Norwich.

(Interestingly, the empty coach move runs via Derby, the Dore curve and the Chat Moss route - I assume this is to maintain route knowledge??)

EDIT: Beaten to it!

I recently travelled on the 17:52 Ely to Manchester( on a Saturday) where the train terminated.
There was an request by the train staff to vacate the train as quickly as possible.
Will this set be running ECS back to Nottingham?

Is the depot at Nottingham east of the station, and if so how will the 6 week remodelling work at Nottingham affect things?

I knew someone would know ! Presumably they do have crews based at the other end in Norwich.

If I'm not mistaken (can't check now) - I thought that one came back from Manchester in service. The arrangements for the Notts blockade have been discussed at length elsewhere on here, but most will go to Etches Park (Derby) instead (some 15x go there already), with possibly a few more than usual outstabling elsewhere.

In an ideal world some of Northern's Liverpool or Manchester based crews would sign class 158s and then they would work early morning/late night services on behalf of EMT instead of long ECS runs.

It use to form the last stopping service over the Hope Valley, which is now served using the last Liverpool. The one that terminates at Manchester is now ECS via Romiley and Dore South Curve.

Liverpool depot used to sign through to Peterborough in Reggie Rail days so you had none of these extremely long ECS movements.

When it was Central trains they had more of a presence in Liverpool with the Birmingham trains. Did the have crews and stable trains at Liverpool at that time, and did the same crews work both routes?

I've noticed one guard with very distinguishable features who used to work Liverpool-Norwich under Central now sometimes appears on Liverpool-Birmingham under LM.

Yes. Nottingham depot used to sign Liverpool to Birmingham via Stafford, and Birmingham to Nottingham via Derby and Leicester. Trains were also covered by Leicester, Birmingham and Crewe depots on the Liverpool to Norwich run (I think!). I believe some old Nottingham turns took you on a grand tour from Nottingham to Birmingham, up to Liverpool, and back down to Nottingham. Likewise some turns did the same with the Crewe route.

Nottingham crews have never signed Liverpool to Birmingham. Not post 95 anyway when i went there.
The closest we ever came to that route was one Saturday or Sunday evening job where we were booked to travel back passenger from Liverpool via Crewe.

I believe Derby conductors also have a part in some of the Liverpool workings now.

I'm not sure about drivers though.

Yep, Derby Conductors have a couple of Notts - Liverpool jobs. Not the Drivers though. The day they let us have some London work is the day we'll let them have some Liverpools!
Unfortunately inter-depot rivalry is alive and well.

Yep, sorry, you're right. I think it was Leicester that did Birmingham to Liverpool.

Yep, forgot about that one. Never had that job with any regularity as i've never signed Tyseley, but had it on occasion when it was arranged for a New St man to bring the empties into Brum from Tyseley.

I think you're right. I'm sure Leicester men used to go that way before they came under XC, or at least until Central opened the depot at Crewe.

Do you remember that late Liverpool job when we used to swap units with the New St crew?
Remember the time when the New St Driver was waiting on the platform for the incoming 170 and off they went, leaving the Notts crew to walk over to their train where they found, waiting for them on Platform 9......... a 323!

How big is EMT's Norwich depot and do they do any other work away from Liverpool - Norwich?

Tiny, just over a dozen of drivers and conductors. Routes are Norwich to Liverpool via Grantham and Melton, and Nottingham to Leicester and Worksop.

It was Piccadilly traincrew that signed Peterborough not Liverpool.
