Peter, whatever they say about the Pendolino windows they are bigger than that one on your avatar!
But you are comparing windows on a pressurised cabin to those on a train!! Pendo windows are the smallest ever!! Why are the windows on 172's not tiny then if its the done thing to have smaller windows now?

Good point, but at least the seat lines up with it...
We were also travelling more than 10 times faster than a 390 does when that picture was taken...

Don't see why tilting has anything to do with it. I believe it has already been pointed out that other trains were designed to tilt yet don't have small windows. But the point was made that passengers "don't want windows anymore". If that is the case why are the 172 windows not very small?

The newer Pendolino designs from the same factory as the 390s have deeper windows as well; not sure if they're also longer windows.

You're comparing chalk with cheese comparing a 390 with a 172, they are made by different companies for a start never mind being made for two different purposes. Whether it be as part of the safety design or because passengers "don't want windows anymore", does it really matter?
It's really quite simple, and it's been explained to you before. Smaller loading gauge is the key; this restricts the size of the body and the equivalent spherical diameter of the cars. Support trusses run along the insides of the vehicles; as the cars are narrower (to enable tilting within a smaller loading gauge), the trusses are closer together which limit the height of the windows. Continental Pendolinos have the same number of trusses but they are further apart as the cars are bigger. The width of the windows are controlled by internal struts and need to not splinter when stressed. Continental Pendolinos have windows that are almost exactly the same width, just taller, like Voyager windows.
The world is (surprise surprise) a very different place from when the APT was designed. The 390 tilts further than the 221. All very good reasons for why the windows are small, they didn't just want to **** on everybody's heads.
Er yes it does. Because if the future of train travel is a metal tube with very small "portholes" to see out of I may reconsider using train travel for leisure. Thankfully in the cab there is a nice big window to see out of when you are driving.

I echo the posters sentiment above. Seems like you are just the stereo-typical enthusiast who whinges. If you would really consider the size of the windows to be a deciding factor in your leisure travel plans, you really have too much time on your hands.
For the last time I am NOT an "enthusiast". Why is it so hard for all you pendo lovers to understand that not all of us want to travel in a bloody metal tube with no natural light!! Fortunately I am not forced to use the WCML to see my family in the midlands I can travel on Chilterns far far superior silver sets and 168's. chiltern is far cheaper even on my priv rate ticket. Sounds like you are a sterio typical computer gamer who is allergic to sunlight!! Bring on the day the new design pendo's with bigger windows get here and these rubbish ones are scrapped.
Ow and for those of you that are allergic to natural sunlight trains are coming fitted with blinds now.

Actually I am your average WCML commuter who doesn't care how big the windows are on the train as long as I get from A to B as quickly and safely as possible. Good for you if you want to use Chiltern over VT, I prefer the quicker service myself.
Oh and I don't play computer games, if your username is anything to go by that is more your generation than mine.

Then don't travel on them and stop complaining :roll: Why do we need all of this complaining? The "Why do 390s need smaller windows? Class xxx doesn't have smaller windows" is quite frankly just annoying, verging on pathetic and has been done to death what must be 50 times over!
If it has been done to death over 50 times then just goes to show how many people disagree with you. Anyway you are welcome to your metal tube with no natural light and cramped conditions. I will gladly travel with chiltern thanks much better travelling experience.........

chiltern = dirty smelly diesels, have you seen the state of the 4 foot in the terminating platforms at Manchester Picadilly, surely it must be a fire risk?
Chiltern do not operate to Manchester Piccadilly, think you might be thinking of Northern.....
Chiltern operate out of Marylebone.

What Virgin ought to do and this applies to their successor is to order MORE 390s as 11 coaches to to a all electric fleet on Birmingham to Scotland which would free up any diesels used there to be used elsewhere like on the Blackpools until the OLHE work there is finished.
This is good because it delivers a much needed increase in seating on that route plus it's more Eco friendly to the environment to run electrics.
Ideally I would like them to use a fleet consisting solely of 390s but that is something for the DfT to deal with.

Isn't that what they are doing, within the existing fleet, by linking London-Birmingham with Birmingham-Scotland?

From what I have read in previous posts the EBWs that extend as BHM-Scotland services will either be 11 car 390s or 2 x 221s. Can't supply a link for that though

You don't get it, do you. The trains are adapted for the smaller UK loading gauge. You may get bigger windows on HS2 but it ain't happening on WCML.
It would be a good story though: "Pendolinos scrapped because Dave has decided the windows are too small". Nothing there for Daily Mail readers to get their teeth into.

Ah but when HS2 is built we get the speed and travelling comfort, no doubt they will have the luxuries people want like wifi and power socket but will also have plenty of natural light from bigger windows so sad people like me can watch the world go by
Plus you won't need pendo's on the WCML then
