Darling makes an interesting point, what happens to the existing network when HS2 is being built.

I found the segment interesting, I am interested in the Politics of it all and may read Hansard from the 1990s

A very good programme indeed. I'd even go so far as to say it should have been on BBC 4 at least.

I have to say, I found Alistair Darling's thoughts about HST quite similar to my own.

That's a good point, particularly given the impact. It's quite interesting hearing a Yorkshire politician arguing why should his constituents subsidise London commuters during the Heath era. Arguably that's something sectorisation almost solved.

Still, a lot of history to fit into a short programme.

The subsidy by schoolchildren is quite a clever idea. Hats off to whoever came up with that one.

Nice idea but in other places school kids had to get the bus because the rail line was closed, Swanage school children attending Secondary School in Wareham for example

Indeed. I disagree with most of the closures since the late sixties.
