Where to move to station wise?

I'm looking to move withing walking distance to a station with fast routes to London Victoria, London Bridge and Guildford via Clapham. East Croydon seems the only place with those links. Are there any other station in London with those criteria.

You wont get fast trains, but I suggest Crystal Palace/Gypsy Hill, Dulwich area, although you'll only be able to get stopping trains, they should be able to get to the London terminals and Croydon town Centre in around 20 mins.

Headline times to London Bridge and Victoria are under 30mins, plus you have services to Reading via Guildford, taking 30-40mins or so. There are nice parts and nasty parts of town, like a lot of places, but you'd probably find somewhere which was perfectly acceptable!

Well, the CR4000s are OK... but as for the other ones... well...

Though of course incidents such as landslides are rare, but when they do happen they screw up the whole network in the area, so you'd have to be quite far away or have really good redundancy measures to cope. Anywhere north of Croydon on Southern/FCC/LO routes would probably be affected by something like that. Redhill does have redundancy in that passengers can sometimes divert via Dorking, Guildford or Tonbridge, but that will always be rather slow, to say the least!

I was born in Croydon and lived there for 26 years. The landslide last year between East Croydon and South Croydon was the first time it happened in my life time- so it was a very much a "one off"..
When I was commuting to London back in the late 1970s/1980s the SR (Central section) , as the Brighton line was then known, went on industrial action a couple of times disrupting/ cancelling trains but I got home then by catching the Hayes line train to Elmers End and train to Addiscombe/Bingham road or today the equivalent journey would be by tram. In the same period even the London Terminal stations closed at times for bomb alerts- so no station is immune from closure.
Since I moved away from the area the Thameslink service was introduced providing trains to a third London destination route- Blackfriars/ City Thameslink/Farringdon .

I grew up in Croydon...........Redhill is a much nicer town and what about living in Guildford?

Ive lived in Guidlford before and it is nice but the proeprty prices are similar to Croydon plus the train ticket is more so I wont be saving anything. And Waterloo is no good for me.

The bits round the edge are much nicer, I'll give you that. Some of the estates and bits round the town centre are frankly unpleasant, but nothing to rival the dodgier bits of Croydon, of course. I know the area extremely well, so I could go into a lot of detail, but I feel it would be off topic!

Have you tried looking at Epsom?

5 trains an hour off peak to Victoria, 2 of which are fast from Sutton to Clapham.

4 trains an hour off peak to Waterloo.

2 direct trains an hour off peak to Guildford.

Peak services to London Bridge direct.

I agree that Croydon and Redhill do have-- "the good, the bad and the ugly".
Can I mention Bromley- Bromley South has a fast service to Victoria and with one change connections to Blackfriars.
Bromley North has a service to London Bridge/Charing Cross although this is often a shuttle to Grove Park.
Orpington has a stopping service to Victoria and a fast service to London Bridge.

Croydon does have 2 stations remember, its just that the other one is just for whether you don't want to get somewhere in a hurry :P

There seems to be this place with an excellent service by train and bus to anywhere in the country: 'Sorry Not in Service' - there seems so many trains and buses go there.

Seriously also check train loadings - there may be a great service but, if you can't get on, they might as well not be running.

I've moved to SE5/SE15 borders - equidistant between Peckham Rye and Denmark Hill, but also East Dulwich too.

You are 10 mins to Victoria, London Bridge and Clapham Junction on the Overground - and for a central area, it's quite affordable and massively on the up. Used to be incredibly rough but now getting quite smart.

You also have the option of the 2tph outer SLL service to London Bridge via Streatham Hill and Sydenham from Balham NR. It's a longer journey, but more chance of getting a seat without being packed like a sardine on the Northern line.
