Just seen this on NRE:

Route affected
Routes to and from London Waterloo

Train operator affected
South West Trains;
Description

A rail defect has been identified between London Waterloo and Vauxhall.

Because of this, emergency engineering work has been organised to take place on Sunday 21 April until approximately 16:00. Platforms 1-10 will be out of use meaning only a very limited train service will be able to operate to and from London Waterloo during this time.

Does anybody know what the problem is? The closure of platforms 1 - 10 would indicate all four of the Main Lines are closed, and Realtime Trains seems to confirm this, showing trains as using the Windsor Lines between Queenstown Road Battersea and Waterloo. Just wondered what the position of the track defect is that would lead to closure of four adjacent tracks.

Isn't it the London Marathon on Sunday too? That could lead to some fun and games!

Pictures on the SWT website here: http://www.southwesttrains.co.uk/MEW.aspx

...suggests it is a complete crossing assembly and a couple of switch blades. Not just the usual sort of points? Does anyone know the correct name? Once you include the room needed to deliver it and crane the new in and old out you could easily knock out the whole mainline side.

It's the crossing and switches from the inside of a double slip.

Thanks for that. It's difficult to realise straightaway, I think because the (left hand) photo they've used cuts off so much of what's on either side.

Much obliged - didn't occur to me to look on the SWT website! Whereabouts is the crossing that's being re-laid? Can't make it out from SWT's photo - could be virtually anywhere in fact!

It is on the down fast line at the end of West crossing just outside Waterloo, the yellow "T" board you can see is between the down fast (to the right but that is actually straight on) and the up slow lines (on the left), it is part of a double slip.

You couldnt get a fault in a worse location as they need to take 4 lines out to give enough room for the cranes to swing!

Why?

There are still trains running (the Waterloo to Guildford stoppers are running twice an hour as normal), or have you just thrown the towel in without even looking!
