How many trains can be serviced at any one point at crown point Norwich?
Are there separate parts to the depot (e.g. coaching stock, class 156, diesel loco (class 90).
Where are all the units stored overnight? I have noticed that much of the mark 3 coaching stock is stored outside the depot. Is there a capacity for how much can be stored?
On Wikipedia I have also read that sometimes class 08 shunters and class 158 units are serviced here. How often does this occur?

Finally are some units stored at the sidings (either at night or during the day when not in use)? I have sometimes noticed EMT class 158s on both platform 6, and sidings next to it. This occurs in evening time so would it mean that its too late for them to go to another depot (owned/ run by EMT )???????

AFAIK, There is at least one 158 which stables overnight at Crown Point, I believe this is so that the 158 can then do the Early morning runs before going to liverpool and swapping with another Unit.

There are 4 EMT Class 158 units that stable at Norwich (either opposite Platform 6 or at the depot).
These arrive on the 13:52, 14:52, 15:52 and 17:52 from Liverpool and depart from Norwich at 05:50 (2 units), 06:57 and 07:57.

The 90s and Marks 3s, Sprinters and Turbostars each have their own maintenance roads, and the Class 170s are maintained by Bombardier IIRC.

However, the unit that forms the 0757 does, I believe work the Lowestoft services, therefore being the first of the four off of Norwich (the 0550 Liverpool Lime Street service being two units as you say.)

Is this the same unit which operates to Great Yarmouth in the evening? And thanks for info :) Much appreciated

Yes it is.

The full diagram for the East Midlands Trains Class 158 is:
05:36 Norwich - Lowestoft
06:35 Lowestoft - Norwich
07:57 Norwich - Liverpool Lime Street
13:52 Liverpool Lime Street - Norwich
19:33 Norwich - Great Yarmouth
20:17 Great Yarmouth - Norwich

Almost all the Mk3 stock is stabled at Crown Point overnight. I think one set spends the night at Ipswich and possibly some at Orient Way.

As has been said there are separate areas at CP for Mk3s, Sprinters and 170s. There are also two (?) 08s there that are used for depot shunting. Stock is also stabled in the Jubilee Sidings (those by platform 6), the platforms of the station itself and occasionally some in the Royal Dock (in fact there is a 321 there at the moment along with a WCRC set (Mk2s + 2 47) and 'County of Essex')

Some sprinters and 170 also stable at Ipswich.

do any GA diesel units stable at Cambridge overnight?
And surely there's at least two or three IC sets at Orient Way (or even in Liverpool street?) overnight- would be a very early ECS otherwise with five services departing for Norwich before 8am!

I know there is an odd job where crews sign on late, work the last train from NRW to CBG, wait on the train at Cambridge and then form the first train of the morning. So yes, at least one diesel unit stables at Cambridge.

And there are 2 I/C sets at Orient Way overnight, 1 at Ipswich and the rest at Norwich.

Do EMT operate their early morning Lowestoft journey on behalf of someone else?

Lowestoft isn't part of EMT's network

On behalf of GA.

Are you sure about that? They would be sitting around Cambridge for six hours, surely no TOC is going to pay a driver and guard for six hours of just not doing anything?!

:D Yes that is correct - stay at Cambridge for 6 hours ! (these trips used to be operated by Central, and Cross Country did not much like them when it took over !

You wouldn't think so but I believe that EMT crews working their Saturdays only York/Scarborough service just spend the day there until it's time for the return working!

Good point, they do spend the day as you say.

it may seem crazy, but with the way the privatised railways works it is perhaps the most efficient way of doing it? The alternative would I guess be a long taxi ride at the end of a shift for the last crew of the night, and a long (and early) taxi ride for the crew for the first train in the morning- that, or the last Norwich-Cambridge and first Cambridge-Norwich couldn't run.

Cambridge is on the fringe of the GA diesel operation.

The crew on the overnight Cambridge only taxi home on a Saturday night & out on a Sunday morning as the train doesnt leave Sunday til 08.38 & rostered turns can only be 10hrs max. It used to also happen Monday mornings until the 22.03 SuO Nrw-Cbg was introduced a couple of years back.

The crew when stabled at Cambridge can be asked to shunt but this very rarely happens & therefore a decent nights kip is guaranteed.

The whole situation arose from the split up of Central trains into Cross Country/East Midlands trains & was a trade off with the latter who no longer served Cambridge. They then provided a 158 for an early morning local trip out of Norwich to Lowestoft.

I have to note that the Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth EMT 158 runs are worked by Greater Anglia crew.

Once upon a time, Cambridge depot had a share of the Norwich - Cambridge work, but that was under BR. Now GA Cambridge drivers only sign EMUs, and there is no GA Cambridge guards depot. So, crazy as you may think this is, you would struggle to come up with a viable alternative.

The use of the 158 in the morning is exactly as dk1 explains, the use of the 158 in the evening is as a result of having to tighten up the class 156 diagrams to allow for a 156 to be away at works. If the Liverpool train is ridiculously late, there is a 170 that could work the Yarmouth trip, subject to maintenance requirements. Using the 158 instead gives more much needed maintenance time for the 170s.

Thanks should be extended to the decent chaps at EMT for playing ball with all this :)

No 153 stables at Cambridge. All our out & back diagrams. 05.10 from ipswich forms first Eastbound working around 06.45 & 21.16 forms last eastbound around 22.45.

Didn't they used to store the Class 86 consists in those curved sidings outside Stratford when it was Anglia Railways? I vividly remember trains there in my youth. don't think the sidings exist anymore.

Thornton Fields. Now the Olympic Park. Stock now goes round to Orient Way which was built as a replacement. Its next to Eurostar at Temple Mills. Can be viewed from Stratford to West Anglia trains.

Am I the only one that read the title as 'crown paint' and expected to read a thread about whether it was legal to take paint on Greater Anglia trains? :P

I was only pointing it out as some previous posts may have lead to confusion
What routes do Norwich depot EMT drivers sign then?

I'm assuming they go to Peterborough obviously, but then how far beyond?

I believe crew swap is generally at Nottingham on the Liverpool runs. I believe they sign EMT's Sprinter fleet (153, 156 & 158), they may also sign other EMT local routes, but I'm not sure.
