Well I'm on the WAG Express now. Shame there's no dinner tonight. Just an open buffet as the chef isn't travelling so feel a bit palmed off there but other than that its not bad.

Was this situation due to the Chef been unable to get to Cardiff due to line closures up here, or ATW decided otherwise, how many were in First?
Any extra stock attched for todays runs Holyhead/Crewe.

We now know Mondays 1821 is the last train to Holyhead & its a 175

Best Wishes
Bob

What items were offered on the open buffet?

The chef had finished for Christmas I believe, or so the hostess seemed to describe, he had prepared the buffet earlier in the day.

To be fair the open buffet was very good, it featured a range of hand prepared wraps, which were lovely, a selection of party sized pastries (cornish pasties and ham & cheese amongst others,) A selection of cooked meats (beef, ham and turkey,) sandwiches (beef & mustard, prawn, egg and chicken,) BBQ chicken wings and spare ribs as well as bread rolls, coleslaw, potato salad and cold boiled potatoes. There was a plate of dessert products as well.

Plenty of food to go around all 5 of us who got on in Cardiff as we all had 2 hefty helpings each with a lot left over for the 2 gentlemen who joined us in Chester.

They had also trimmed up First with some tinsel hanging from the overhead storage and little foil snowflakes on the tables as well as candles.

Although I was expecting the full meal service the buffet was a great way to break the ice with the other travellers in First.

Hope that covers your question as well merlodlliw.

Taken literally, this document only restricts Pacers between Sutton Bridge Jn and Severn Bridge Jn in Shrewsbury.

I took " cleared Sutton Bridge Jn and Maindee West Jn" to mean only those junctions and not the stretch of track, as elsewhere on that page mention is made of (for example) "Ebbw Vale Parkway to Park Jn". It's about as clear as some routeing guide easement texts... :P

Sorry if this has been answered already - is the restaurant service operating tomorrow between Shrewsbury and Cardiff?

I found it interesting how full Gerald was on the 29th December runs, several pics & stories in this weeks North Wales rail newsboard show. Including loading & unloading at Crewe with first class in use as bonus standard.

As the Editor states

"Messages from people on the board the train told the assembled 'cranks' (as our friends on the railway like to call us) that the incoming train was 'packed to the gills' and so it proved to be. The passengers and their luggage, some of which had been loaded into the Driving Van Trailer, took a considerable time to alight, causing some conflict with the many people wishing to get on, as can be seen."

Currently on the 05.33 from Holyhead, in 1st. As far as I can tell the only other people who have been in 1st are ATW staff, seeing as the only breakfast served was for myself. Good breakfast as well, but I'd have expected more leisure travellers than this for a Friday.

Also a bit peeved that you can get railcard discounts on the 1st class upgrade supplement, which would have saved a fair few quid.

I notice on ATW Journey Check that 18 21 Cardiff to Holyhead tonight delayed at Newport by 40 minutes due to train fault. It went forward without catering so it would appear that a Unit was rushed to Newport to replace the 67 & Coaches.

Indeedy. I think it managed to get going again later because something whizzed past us with 5 carriages at approx 20:50 between Cwmbran and Newport.

Incidentally - keep an eye on developments for the December timetable...

The set was booked to go back to Canton after failing.

May I take that second part as being a subtle hint that the set may see some other use come December?

I wonder what it was then - didn't sound like a 3+2 175....hmm.

Gerallt from Holyhead this morning is formed 3 coaches instead of 4 so presume 175. There is also reduced catering so just a trolley, no doubt.

That is certainly what passed here around 0830!!

We had heard they may be "improvements" later this year.

Interesting!! What sort of developments could those be!?

Now the "let's go East" focused Mr Sargeant has moved on, are we to see meaningful improvements?

The 18:21 departure is a ridiculous off-peak departure time, whilst the 16:21 and 17:21 are full and standing......

Ooh, please tell what these improvements are :)

Personally, I would keep the morning diagram for the 1st set the same, but swap the evening diagram with the 1621 departure (1510 from Swansea). The set can work the 1314 Cardiff - Swansea instead of the DMU off the 0830 Llandudno - Cardiff to get it into postition. The DMU can then be used as said below. I would introduce an additional call at Prestatyn in both directions, and extend the 1621 to Holyhead from Chester, calling at Rhyl, Llandudno Junction and Bangor. People for Flint/Prestatyn/Colwyn Bay can use the following Voyager.

I would have a second set leave Holyhead at 0150 like the old boat train used to before VT pulled the plug, and have it call Holyhead - Bangor - Llandudno Junction - Rhyl - Chester - Crewe - Shrewsbury - Hereford - Abergavenny - Newport - Cardiff Central, then return to Holyhead in the place of the 0721, calling at the stations it does now, excluding the North Wales Coast request stops, which can be picked up by the 0850 Manchester - Holyhead. This set can then work the 1232 Holyhead - Cardiff train, but not stopping at the Anglesey request stops it does as these can be picked up by the 1127 Holyhead - Birmingham. The Cardiff-Maesteg portion can then be picked up by the DMU from the 0830 Llandudno - Cardiff. The Loco hauled set can then work the 1721 Cardiff - Holyhead calling at the same stations as the 1821 does now, plus Prestatyn. The 1821 can then be worked by the DMU off the current 1721. Also, the 0830 Llandudno - Cardiff can call additionally at Hereford & Abergavenny.

Set 1
0531 Holyhead - Cardiff via Wrexham
1314 Cardiff - Swansea
1510 Swansea - Holyhead via Crewe

Set 2
0150 Holyhead - Cardiff via Crewe
0721 Cardiff - Holyhead via Wrexham
1232 Holyhead - Cardiff via Wrexham
1721 Cardiff - Holyhead via Wrexham

Adam :D

The 1621 & 1721 are primarily serving the evening peak market for the southern half of the Marches and need to stop at Cwmbran, Abergavenney etc. The Premier set is the wrong sort of train for this market which is why it was moved.

When NR resignal the Marches lines they'll be provision for 1tph to Abergavenney that turns back there as well as 2 tphs Newport-Hereford

There's already 2 trains per hour north of Newport (one to Manchester, one to Holyhead) in some hours. So, do you mean there will be capacity for another 2 trains an hour from Newport, turning back at Hereford, on top of that plus an hourly Abergavenny?

In other words, if I have understood you correctly, there will be:
  • 5tph capacity between Newport and Abergavenny
  • 4tph capacity between Abergavenny and Hereford
  • Whatever the present capacity is (2tph?) between Hereford and Shrewsbury

I suspect that the problem is pathing north of Shrewsbury via Wrexham as well. The premier express could run earlier but couldn't run via Wrexham or if it did run @1621 you,d have to turn it into a stopper to Chester and terminate the 1709 ex bhm intl at Shrewsbury

NR plan is to signal Newport to salop on assumption of 2 fast/semi fast and 1 freight path per hour the whole length, with a additional stoping passenger path per hour to Abergavenny and between craven arms and Shrewsbury for heart of Wales trains.

Does anyone know what caused the failure? I was returning from Cardiff yesterday and was disappointed to find a 175, hadn't seen this thread so was unaware of the previous days failure (no problems noticed on the run that morning, tho'). I did ask the Guard but he was rather reticent and just said 'it's broken'.
Incidentally,at each station display there was a note added to the train details 'Regret no first class, no resturant(sic) trolley service Hereford to Chester). I thought that this latter information was very helpful to those boarding along the coast!
