HOW ABOUT THIS !!!!!
Dorchester South - Dorchester West, Checked on Nat Rail Enqu site myself.
Walk- 8mins (free).
11.49 Dorch S-Upwey arr12.55 (6min)
13.15 Upwey-Dorch W arr13.22 (7min)
Cheapest fare- A WHOPPING £42.00 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THATS JUST OVER £3.23p per minuite :-x :-x :-x

Or buy two singles (to and from Upwey) at £3.20 each. A small but useful saving compared with £42.00.

Surely Runcorn to Runcorn East. By train you'd have to go to Liverpool S Pwy, then Warrington Cntl, then Bank Quay, then to Runcorn East. Or via Crewe, and Warrington Bank Quay

Alternatively would a return from 'Dorchester Stns' to Upwey be any cheaper ?

See that Liskeard - Coombe also mentioned, never tried it, but locally said that if you just missed the train at Liskeard, you could run downhill and catch it at coombe

On the rare occasion that FGW decides the timetable will let your train call at Coombe Junction Halt, or whatever it's called these days, that is (why services can't go the short way into the platform is unclear to me - surely the two minutes or so extra that would be spent on each journey would lead to a few extra passengers for that station, thereby justifying its existence a tiny bit more?).

thought of that one, since you are advised to walk between theses 2 stations

Certainly possible having walked it in about 15 mins and went to the entrance furthest away from Liskerad....

Severn Beach to Pilning. A 50 minute walk. On a Saturday (the only day Pilning is served) the journey by train takes 1h46mins.

If it's not a Saturday, then taking the train can take up to a week!

It's also possible to cycle between Severn Beach and Chepstow quicker than going by train.

Is there a footpath ove rone of the Severn bridges then, as it looks on my map you have to go almost up to Gloucester to cross the river?

Yes - alongside the old crossing.

Same over the Humber Bridge - a footpath alongside.

Also probably the tube's two closest stations: Covent Garden and Leicester Square.

Possibly the most appropriate answer to this thread because (I think) it's the only answer where there is a direct train that is very frequent and takes the most direct possible route (almost in a straight line, and non-stop between the two stations) but it's still quicker to walk!

I would suspect the same would be true of Charing Cross to Embankment as well.

London Bridge to Victoria is probably quicker to walk than take the direct train.

Especially when there is no direct train any more ;)

Meaning it's quicker to walk between Barton-on-Humber and Hessle stations. About an hour on foot. 2h45mins by train.

If you are tall enough, a bit further upstream and at low tide you could even try walking across the estuary!

The distance between the 2 Runcorn stations is enough to put me off walking it, busing it a different matter, plus you'd still have to walk across Warrington, it'd be Runcorn, Liverpool Lime Street, Warrington Bank Quay & Runcorn East, if there's no direct train Lime Street-WBQ the change at either Earlstown or Newton Le Willows.

In London, there are several where the GOBLIN passes close to another rail route, eg:-

Seven Sisters - South Tottenham
Harringay Green Lanes - Harringay
Wanstead Park - Forest Gate
Woodgrange Park - Manor Park
Crouch Hill - Finsbury Park

There are still direct trains via the outer South London Line e.g http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/W72904/2013/02/22
It's just the ones via the Inner South London Line that don't run since the Overground started.

Ah, I stand corrected! Thanks Chris M!

The only one in London I have done is 'West Hampstead' Rail to Underground, but now on a map they are show as jointed? You still got to go out on to public highway to walk the 50 odd yards. So is this a case of along walk between platforms?

TFL does seem to be blurring the definition of what constitutes a single station in one or two places ;)

Radyr - Coryton?

I walked this once and got there to find the train already there, but I was navigating by nose and popped into a shop for a chocolate bar on the way. If I really tried I could probably beat it.

Milford Haven to Pembroke Dock (Google walking ~2hr 30min) can only be beaten on the first train of the morning out of Milford (2hr 17min). After that the connections mean it's far slower (3hr 10min).

Felixstowe to Harwich Town is quicker by foot, but only on days when the ferry is operating. Similarly Gravesend to Tilbury Town is quicker by foot and ferry than by train - massively so if restricted to National Rail services only.

How about Harrow on the Hill to Harrow and Wealdstone.

Its about 15 mins brisk walk.

Going via NR it would, I think, be five trains

1. To Marylebone

2 To Banbury

3 To Coventry

4 To Watford Junction

5 To Harrow and Wealdstone.

I doubt if it could be done in less than 5 hours.

ETA that you could combine 4 and 5 via a LM slow but that would likely increase the time taken

Pontefract has 3 stations, dont know how you would do them all by train ?

Tanshelf and Monkhill are easy as they're consecutive stops on the Wakefield - Knottingley service. To get to Baghill, you'd have to go Wakefield Kirkgate, Westgate and then down to Moorthorpe to catch one of teh two trains a day that run to Baghill.

Barton on Humber to Hessle.

A 5 mile trot across the Humber Bridge or a 3 hour train journey via Habrough and Donny!
Not at the moment... ;)

Netherfield to Carlton station in the Nottingham suburbs is less than half a mile apart and takes about 5 minutes to walk or by bus, but the train changing at Nottingham is 30 minutes for the shortest journey or 2h 15m for the longest. Going the opposite way from Carlton to Netherfield the shortest train journey lasts 1h 31m and the longest is 3h 28m.

Quickest is 3 hours 9 minutes on the TFL planner with the above route.

Burscough Junction to Burscough Bridge by rail would take a while - much longer than the walking time. :D

Using the ferry is not what I would call 'on foot'

Now walking on water, that is a different story.
