On 377's the pass com, while not braking the train there and then, means the driver has to keep pressing in a button with their feet, otherwise the brakes will kick in. What makes things worse during accidental activation (mainly in the small toilet), is the person just running away. All they have to say is, sorry, mistake, but no, they run off, meaning me the guard has to get through up to 11 coaches to see whats up. If the activation happens at a station, we cannot leave until its sorted.

The green handle on the door, is the egress handle and will stop the train when pulled, no overriding.

Meanwhile, on a 313, the call for aid. I wished the pressed button flashed when pressed, as to reset, you have to pick up the phone handset on the side it was activated. Since when you get there, everyone is always looking the other way, you never know. So, with a guess you pick up one handset, replace it, then wait.........................'conductor, call for aid activated', doh!!!, so you go to the other side and try again. Meanwhile the train is now running late.

As for non emergency, I've never had any issues with people finding me. Sometimes at a station you might get someone popping their head out to see where I am. Last time was a pass who came up saying her coach was freezing. I said I'd take a look after the next station. Went along. The coach was a bit colder, but by not much. all the other passengers said, its fine, but she was insistant it was freezing. I just said, the heating is on, just not blasting, its a bit warmer in the next coach, and lots of seats, why not move. She did not.

Not quite true, when the egress is pulled at speed, the doors open a couple of inches and the brake can be overridden for 80 secs before the doors will open fully (whether the train is moving or not) - this allows the driver to find somewhere safe to stop. There's a loss of interlock though so the train will only coast and the driver won't be able to take power.

If anyone needs to contact train crew in a non emergency situation, either walk through the train until you find someone or knock on the door of the back cab. If there is no one around, wait until the next stop and give the driver a knock on the front cab window. A lot of TOC's now have facebook and twitter feeds you can use to contact the company. If you can identify the train you are on the staff that run these feeds can often contact the train crew direct and pass information or requests on.

On the 360's if the egress handle is pulled it will initiate an emergency brake application the yellow button by the DSD wont override it but the doors will not open until the speed of the train is below 3mph to stop people jumping out while the train is still doing 50mph. The pass comm brake activation can be stopped with the yellow kick button.

True, but what I'm saying is in reply to the poster who said, what about the green or red. The red button can be used to inform the train crew of something, but will not stop the train. While pulling the egress, while its up to 80 seconds, its still going to stop the train pretty sharpish, thus not to be used unless you really really have to....but thats for another thread.

I agree with you a call for aid button next to the pass comm would probably be a good idea as long as they were not abused.

360's have call for aid buttons in the toilets and in the wheelchair area. They do not initiate a brake application when pressed.

Again, the 'Call for Aid' is different to a PASSCOM. Hence most disabled-friendly toilets will have both.

Sorry but I do know this I sign 360 and drive them every day :D. Like I said call for aid buttons do not initiate a break application but pass comms do (but that can be overridden on a 360 if the button is kicked within 6 seconds)
