This coming autumn I'm finally going to realise a long held ambition and travel across the US by train. In this case it's the Empire Builder from Seattle to Chicago.
On booking the tickets I was amazed to discover that the cost came out at the equivalent of £197 each. That's for a 2000 mile trip including sleeping accommodation (a roomette) and all meals. This seems incredibly cheap when you consider the cost of peak rail fares here in the UK. Is Amtrak more efficient or just soaking up federal money?
