I was wondering if any of you on here have had this; where you really like a band or musician, but over a few months you just go right off them. It's happened three times to me, with the Lostprophets, Muse, and The Verve.
I was a massive Lostprophets fan in the autumn of 2011, but during the final month of that year, I went right off them. It was either because I started listening to the Manic Street Preachers for the first time in ages. It might also have been my willingness to return to my 90s Britpop music, which I'd neglected in favour of grunge and of course, the Prophets. Either way, on the 27th of that month, I came home from London, with my new laptop, and decided to spend the day listening to the Prophets. I ended up so bored doing this that I gave up by the late afternoon, and finished the day with Amy Macdonald, Arctic Monkeys and Oasis, which went down so much better. Since then, I've tried listening to the Prophets and it just hasn't worked, so I've given up with the band.
Muse couldn't have done much more to totally ruin themselves last year. I felt they were about to go the same way as the Lostprophets in my collection by May last year, feeling that I'd moved on from that sort of music and angst-filled stuff back towards Britpop, mid-2000s indie rock/indie pop and 1960s rock n roll. I always felt Muse were much better than the Lostprophets, and so I thought I'd end up getting back into them sooner rather than later.
Then they released Survival, which was bloody awful on an entirely different level. After that was an interview in the NME, where Matt Bellamy came out with the biggest pile of crap I've ever read explaining the theme of their new album (typical end of the world rubbish). That dubstep song they released at the end of July was the last straw. I'm finished with Muse now.
The Verve disappeared from my collection thanks mainly to the efforts of The Drugs Don't Work. It should be illegal to write a song THAT depressing. What's worse, it has a habit of getting stuck in my head on a regular basis.
So yeah, these are my rational (or is it irrational?
) reasons for giving up on these bands. My evolving music taste may also explain why I gave up on these bands. (I've gone from being someone who liked metal, grunge and hard rock to someone who likes Britpop, indie rock/indie pop and classic British music of the last 50 years. Strange, eh?)
