What extinct locomotive classes would you have liked to see preserved. I have a liking for the Leader steam loco.

Class 17 - it's an unusual looking locomotive and was in service for less than 5 years on some units.
Class 23 - at least an engine survived!
4DD - I'd have liked to have seen our countries only double decker trains preserved better than rusting in a yard.
2-NOL - as a kid I had relatives telling me about these trains so if like to have seen one!
HS4000 - again an unusual train
Class 370 - as mentioned a full working APT but I supposed its a bit tricky with the unusual tilting equipment

class 22

Urie's LSWR H16 -Pacific tank locomotive built for trip working from Feltham yard, their size and power would make them ideal for the larger preserved railways. Always liked the look of the H16's a rugged and handsome design. I would of also like to have seen one of the LMS's Beyer Garratts survive too.

Add to that a class 16, 21, 22, 29, 70 (Bulleid electric loco).

Several of these types could have been saved if circumstances had been different.
D601 and D6122 remained intact at Woodham's scrapyard, Barry until 1980 (an attempt were made to save D601 but was unsuccessful). Both locos were cut up in July 1980.
D6319 was sold for preservation but cut up by Swindon Works in error.
KESTREL survived intact in Russia until 1993.

A Drummond "Paddlebox" 4-6-0, to give 60103 competition in the Imposing Looking But Crap stakes...

D601/D6122/D6319/D5901 would have been nice, mind.

I'd like to have seen a full 4EPB preserved in working order. One does remain but is apparently not in good working order (with one carriage being kept elsewhere and cannibalised for spares). I was quite disappointed when I read that 5001 had been sold for scrap and broken up.

Class 70.

First operational British main line electric locomotives.

Being a youngster, only born in 1965 (47) the one thing I have learned about our history is that the British, in times gone by, had an unbelievable amount of creativeness regarding design and technology back in the "old days".

I just read-up on that locomotive (having never heard of it before) and the technology considering it was developed in the thirties was incredible.

Much of the prototype HST is still with us.

Dont forget powercar 41001 which is currently been restored to working order and most of the coaches are still in service with East Coast & FGW.

I agree with the others. A Blue Pullman set would have been good for use in similar way like the Brighton Belle cars have been used on the Orient Express.

A P1, a P2, a U1 Garratt or an LMS Garratt, because they were big and spectacular. Any version of a Claude Hamilton, because they hauled the suburban trains on my line for many years (although there's a chance we might see a replica). A Baby Deltic, for similar reasons (although we know we will see a replica now). And a B17, because they were a decent little design that spread all over the LNER, only to vanish without trace. Maybe a V3 tank as well, preferably on a Scottish line somewhere, as a reminder of what Glasgow's suburban network was once like.

I can't believe it. I travelled on one of these fifty odd years ago, with my parents. Not a trip specially for this EMU but a day out to "grannies" and this happened to be the train on the return journey.

I hadn't realised, until now, that they were unique, or I might have taken a bit more notice. I was a GWR lad and rarely travelled on the Southern.

A NBL main-line diesel. There are none!

I mean, ok they were terrible, but NBL deserved *one* at least...

Too many others to list.
