I imagine re-count after re-count would be one factor.

Given it looks like Obama has won Florida it is rather a big margin, very comfortable in fact. People can rattle on about the popular vote but it means nothing.

He did but he only won by 2% which out of one hundred and nineteen million votes cast for the two candidates is a pretty tiny margin of victory. But as YorkshrieRider alludes to it doesn't matter because in the Electoral College it was a drubbing.

I only made that posting as it appeared that some members earlier in the thread seemed to suggest that Obama would have not won a larger share of the popular vote.

Even completely one-sided electoral colleges don't translate to such a big margin in the popular vote; like in 1984 when Reagan defeated Mondale by 525 to 13, Reagan only got 58.8% of the vote.

An interesting aside is that some of the Electoral Colleges allocate their votes on a proportional system, but only a handful.

Maine and Nebraska are the most awkward. They give two votes to the overall winner, and then distribute points according to how each area of the State has voted for each candidate, resulting in Obama having scored 1 for Nebraska in 2008 against McCain's 4...

That's still a couple of million votes to be fair.
I must admit, I'd have expected turnout to be higher, given a population of around 350 million.

The number of registered voters in the US is 207 million. (The number of eligible voters is around 245m.)
Indeed. That's less than half (of eligible voters), which seems low to me.

Managed to find a full list of the candidates standing in Florida and find there is one called Roseanne Barr. Is she the same person who used to have her own situation comedy TV series quite some time ago ?
That's interesting. Is she standing for any particular party ? TBH I think "the" Roseanne Barr is still well known enough over here to have been mentioned in the papers (or at least the showbiz columns) had she been standing.

The report I read referred to her as a comedienne. She stood on the Peace and Freedom ticket and in Florida, she is said to have received 48,797 votes.

I would expect Paul Ryan for the Republicans, he's young, energetic and I actually found him quite a likeable person, as a character he's strikes me as a white Obama.

Which is why I said 'as a character' - he brings the youthfullness, eagerness and chirpyness that Obama brought in 2008. Of course he's a world apart from Obama on policy, but to look at...
I'd say that is an absolute certainty next time around.

Unless she decides she has had enough and retires, this seems pretty likely. Could Biden have a go if not?
I'm still disappointed she didn't get the nomination in 2008. Assuming she went on to win the election we'd have had the wonderful symmetry of Bush - Clinton - Bush - Clinton!
But in all seriousness I would be fairly surprised if she didn't at least try for the nomination and I wouldn't be surprised if she won it.
