Here we find ourselves, almost midnight on Friday night, in a strange town at a disembarkation point unknown, but it looks like it must be somewhere reasonably sizable as there are "clubbers" still out in profusion, so we ask where we are and if, as they said in the Christmas story, there is "any room at the inn". We are greeted with joviality and unbelief..."Have you never heard of Cheadle?"...You are in Staffordshire"... is the astonished comment made and we are directed to a small hotel, where the night porter takes pity on us after hearing our story and since we pay in cash rather than by debit card, we are given a room for the night and an early morning alarm call. We are directed to the bus stop where we board the 0638 First Potteries service 32A to Cotton (Beelow Lane) that arrives there at 0654 on Saturday morning.

After looking at all the options, we decide we have no choice but to get the 11:41 first in Staffordshire and South Cheshire no 32A to Hanley bus station arriving there at 12:37 on Saturday Afternoon

I did think that a 5 hour wait at Cotton seemed rather long, but after the previous matter of required corrections, I decided to make a posting to follow that one.

yes, but we spent several hours wandering around and looking at timetables, we decided we didn't want to back track and so continued our journey using a different bus service.

Yes, other 32A services to Hanley are available without the excessive wait. We remain at Cotton at 0654 on Saturday.

After a reasonably short wait, we get on the Alton Towers Transport bus number 10A to Leek at 07.35 which arrives adjacent to Leek Bus Station at 07.52 on Saturday morning.

After grabbing a butty, we then grab the 08:20 Arriva no 118 bus to Buxton, (Market Place) arriving there at 08:50 Saturday morning.

Time to examine the Pavilion with its range of "hothouse plants" and a hot drink in the cafe there, before returning to Market Place to take a journey into the more peaceful part of Derbyshire, so we board the 1008 High Peak service 442 to Tissington (Washbrook Lane) that arrives there at 1108 on Saturday morning.

Its a little bit early for a pint in the Blue Bell, so we have a wander into the village, have a bit of a nosy at the old LNWR Buxton-Ashbourne line , but decide against hiring a bike to explore further. We notice that the High Peak bus service 42 comes into the village, so catch the 12.11 bus into Ashbourne, arriving at the bus station at 12.22 on Saturday.

Forty minutes in Ashbourne (lunch?) before hoping on the 12.50 Trent Barton swift to Derby Bus Station, arriving at 14.05 on Saturday afternoon.

After a wander around Derby, we head for Midland station to catch the 16:11 XC service to Newcastle-upon-Tyne, arriving there at 18:44 on Saturday afternoon.

After a little rest, we grab the 13:32 Stagecoach in Cumbria 301 Service to Whitehaven, lowther street Arriving there at 13:55 on Sunday Afternoon.

Sadly, with no cable incline to Albright & Wilson to go and watch any more, and no steam dredger "Clearway" in the harbour, we wander over to the Central Hotel. Over a couple of pints of Old Peculier, we wonder when Whitehaven (Bransty) became simply Whitehaven, then take a leisurely stroll to said railway station to catch the 16.28 Northern service to Maryport which arrives at 16.54 on Sunday teatime.

Leaving the railway station, we make our way to the bus stop on Curzon Street to check the time of the next bus which is still some time yet, so we have a Sunday afternoon stroll around the area to pass some of the time, before returning to the bus stop and waiting patiently until it is time to board the 1852 Stagecoach in Cumbria service 302 to Thursby (Bankend) that arrives there at 1938 on Sunday evening.

We have exactly an hour to wait in this Cumbrian backwater (at least it's got a pub. On the map anyway) before taking the Stagecoach 300 on to Carlisle Lowther Street, arriving at 2055 Saturday evening

A quick change of plan sees us heading in the opposite direction at 2027 (from Thursby Village) on Stagecoach 300 to Aspatria Market Place, arriving at 2053 Sunday evening

A Sunday evening southerly coastal rail ride still offers another onward journey, so we enter the railway station and it is with pleasure that we eventually board the 2217 Northern service to Whitehaven that arrives there at 2300 on Sunday evening.

We call it a night at Whitehaven, and resume travel at 05:30 from Lowther Street, taking the Stagecoach Cumbria route 302 (route number changes to 300 at Maryport) to Wigton, King Street arriving 06:41 on Monday
