Nottingham Station. Another platform?

Hello everyone.

I understand that in the summer of next year, Nottingham station will be having a big upgrade.

This will include a new concourse, new booking office, and a new destination board.

Strangly enough, i heard there will be an seventh platform. I'm not sure where this will be situated. Perhaps another terminal one like platform 2, except inbetween platforms 4 and 5. Or maybe knocking the wall opposite platform 1 and shortening the road just outside to one way and putting it there.

What are your views and thoughts?

Apparently Platform 4 will be split in two to become four and five, the present five and six becoming six and seven.

The lines will not be bidirectional so the new 4 and 5 I guess will be up and down, that is it will no longer be a through patform

My understanding is that the current platform 6 will not be made an island platform, but that the clearances for that to happen do exist. The station remodelling design allows passive provision to add an additional track behind platform 6 at a later date.

Platform 4 was never a through platform though, it had the Nott'm - Mansf'ld Woodhouse, Nott'm - London st pancras and the arrival of the b'ham new street - Nott'm.

Yes, a platform will be stepped out of four to the through line, this will make the current platform four (renumbered as 5) only accessable from the london end of the station, and the New stepped out platform (4) accessable from both ends, but probably only long enough for a 3/4 car MU

I imagine this will see more intensive use of the current 1,3 and 5 for the Longer Meridians and HST's, as I dont think the new platofrm 5 will be long enough (although maybe just, depending on how far up it is positioned

I believe Wyvern means 'through' as in physically having a through track, as opposed to a bay (such as platform 2 at Nottingham).

Platform 4 is most definitely a through platform, with plenty of movements to/from the east (although most are only shunts).

As stated above, the proposal is for the new platform to be formed by extending the eastern part of the existing platform 4 out to provide a new platform face adjacent to what's now "4 middle" road. I'd be surprised if either were long enough to accomodate an HST.

Also the other through line willl be removed as far as I can divine from the artist's impressions of the new platform.

Nottingham is getting far more than this. The NET (tram system) is undergoing a major extension which will include new routes to Chilwell and Beeston.

The works include extending from the existing Nottinham station (tram terminus) over the railway station. These proposals are not really made clear on the East Midlands website.

The tram route is following the route of the old GCR and yes, it does go right over the railway station. I suspect the new bridge will be a bit more elegant than the original!
(It's quite interesting to see how much of the GCR route is re-used and where it deviates away...)

The Nottingham tram website does have some very detailed maps on it. The one of the station bridge is:

If you are interested, do look at the plans where the tram goes through the hospital grounds. It's going to be a spectacular elevated line between the buildings with a station perched above the road.

They are cracking on with the work - there's a lot of civil engineering going on as preparation work both at/near the station and along the rest of the new route.
