Chapel-en-le-Frith to Sheffield: routes

Hello All,

I hope to do the above journey shortly but the journey planners come up with very few options, just a couple involving a walk at New Mills or a train that calls at Hazel Grove and Chinley, and nothing much in the morning. Otherwise it's nothing found or the NRE 'two tickets required.'

Most of the time the only way to do it is take a Manchester train to Stockport then a TPE or EMT from Stockport to Sheffield. The problem, I suspect, is the doubling back between Hazel Grove and Stockport. Do you think this is in fact a permitted route, being the shortest route with a regular service?

ATOS booking engines show a change at Stockport to be valid.

IIRC there's only one morning Chinley-Hazel Grove service and one evening Hazel Grove-Chinley service.

I live in Chapel and use Chinley more often than Chapel cos its cheaper to get to Manchester, Liverpool and of course the Sheffield connection.

2.6 miles according to Google Maps, assuming the user starts in Chapel-en-le-Firth itself and doesn't start 1 mile south of the station.

And that might not be suitable for all rail users - I wouldn't recommend it for an 80 year old walking back from the last train.

Its exactly 2 miles from the centre of Chapel for definite, I do the journey regularly enough and takes between 25 and 30 minutes. Its 2.7 miles station to station, its about a 15-20 minute walk back to the centre of Chapel from the station! Going via New Mills or Stockport, unless the person was incapable of doing so would be incredibly time consuming and costly. I'm not saying the walk is suitable for all rail users.

Nowt wrong with the walk off the last train either, coming off the last train at Chapel can be an interesting one though!

I was trying to make a worse case scenario where the person would have already walked a mile from a different direction to get to Chapel-en-le-Frith station and would then have to walk the distance between the two on top of that.

And my comment about the last train was more to do with poor and non-existent street lighting on some rural roads. I couldn't use to take the shortest route to my local station in the dark due to there being a completely unlit walkway but the building of a new flood lit car park next to the walkway has changed that.

Thanks for all the replies, both the uncovering of that easement and the suggestion of using Chinley, which had already crossed my mind. Away from my usual residence of Beeston, I am temporarily staying about 50 yds from where the old A6 passes under the Peak Forest line, so I am already kind of in the Chinley direction from the centre of Chapel, so I suspect that will turn out to be the best option, in terms of both time and price. I am fortunately nowhere near yet incapable of a 2 mile walk - at least, I hope not!

Chinley to Chapel follows the main road back, a bit of it is not well lit. Chapel station follows Station Road which is lit, but there are occasions where "tramps" have been found sleeping in the bushes just past the freight line bridge! It does frighten the living daylight out of you

There is however nothing more eerie than walking to Chapel station for the first train on a foggy winter morning, especially when your not likely to come across anyone or any vehicle on the way! Now that is interesting! Anyway I'm going off topic.

Yes it leaves to Chapel from Chinley a minute before the train to Manchester is due. And the service from Chapel arrives just after the train to Sheffield leaves.

In terms of fares, a Derbyshire Wayfarer would be an option, so long as the journey is off peak. It's £11.10 and would cover a Chapel to Sheffield journey via New Mills (but not via Stockport).

The Dark Peak (1:25 000) OL1 covers Chinley and Chapel-en-le-Frith town but doesn't quite reach south enough to Chapel station, which I should think is then covered by The White Peak OL24.
