Do you mind me asking what was required in the DFFT - an example of the question type as it doesn't sound like the 'dials and cable' test? Cheers mate.

The test consists of 20 diagrams of a new and innovative train system. For each diagram candidates are also presented with the display panel showing different instruments and dials for that particular train, some technical information about the train and a fault finder guide.

The fault finder guide contains information about what to do once you have identified a fault as well as the order of priority for solving faults. Candidates must utilise all of this information to decide which faults to solve, (they only have time to solve the top two faults). They must then identify a code for solving the fault and any other action that may be required to solve the fault.

Did my fault finding today and have completley blown my chances, the test was straight forward and should be easy, but at 2.30am this morning i had to call the emergency vet to my home and have my 9yr old dog put down due to kidney and liver faluire 48 hrs earlier she was fine or so i thought, This was 'my, dog i love her very much and this has completley devestated me and my family, i could just not take in the info i was just going round in circles, I had no sleep and was totaly drained and am sure i have fu###d up mine and my familys chances, But in case i haven't by some slim chance. Please stop giving away the game to other people!!!!!!!!!! I went in blind you went in blind and stop preparing people for whats coming the less well they do the better we do thankyou

Yes thats pretty much it.:|

Did my assessments today in Manchester.

Certainly isn't easy and I would imagine its almost impossible to finish.

Nothing more I can do now.

Another intake doing theirs tomorrow.

Hopefully papers will be marked in the next day or two.

Sorry to hear that mate but well said regarding giving the others heads up.

Its an unfair advantage if any other candidates have prior knowledge of the selection process over and above anyone else.<(<(

Said this to the wife earlier.

Sorry about your dog. I'm not giving anything away, that post was copied and pasted from the ocop assessment body. It doesn't in anyway assist or help others. I read that before I attended today and still didn't have any idea what to expect. You cant prepare for this excercise, only complete the practice questions in the day to give you an understanding.

There is wanting to be spoon fed with answers and there is using your initiative and doing a bit of research. Nothing wrong with the latter.

Its fun to these kind of threads as there is always alot on the line peoples hopes, dreams and so much more but at the end of the day like Philc was saying there is no way to prepare for such a test. I think its fine saying what has been already said saves anyone fretting they havent revised enough when in actual fact they dont need too revise for this stage at the very least philc has just calmed peoples nerves and put them at ease.

This assessment is widely used in first stage assessments across the rail industry you simply need to do what a train driver does - take information in at a reasonable rate and utilise it as equally as fast the best prep for this is a good nights sleep ,cup of herbal tea no caffeine as it slows down the receptors on the frontal lobe and a good breakfast

good luck to everyone

on a little note anyone whos been reading the news will have read that west coast have just secured and signed the contract and will be running more trains than there is currently meaning more jobs available so anyone whos lost out now in a couple of months there will always be another job :D

I'd be surprised if they made you do mech test as well as DFFT, I would have thought it be one or other but if it is both then they are being thorough

With reference to this post. I have worked for the rail industry for 23 years. I have heard many reasons for not doing wel at tests some more elaborate than others. At the start of all tests the facilitator asks if there are any reasons why you cannot take the test. You should have said then. It's no good moaning now. I have also interviewed for rail jobs and as far as I'm concerned the more preparation you do the better. It shows you want the job.

And you will find the ones asking hundreds of question and asking to be spoon fed fail the tests and dissapear from the forums without a trace, please, people use your own initiative and don't keep relying on others information (which is usually not quite correct by the way) if you cannot do this the job is not for you I am afraid.

Thank you PhilC for your response, didn't realise my question would cause such a stir.

It would seem memories are obviously short for some as they appear to forget that they too spent time researching the assessment process and spent time practising for the different eventualities prior to undertaking their own assessment stage. In fact, they more than likely learnt what they now know from this very same forum - from those who no doubt already went through the same process.

Though I appreciate Ayamonte's concern with others competing with him for the job, thus his snipe at PhilC, are we now saying that information giving and receiving is only welcomed outside the occurrence of any recruitment process? For in this case, no help would be forthcoming and this forum would have die a death many moons ago! From what i have seen up to now, no one has provided answers to any examination questions, but everyone in this community has sought a little help and information on how to prepare themselves for any potential assessments.

I always wonder what a good score is on a test when you have 15 minutes to answer 20 questions.

Especially as the questions are long and require a little bit of thinking about etc due to the rules etc hmmm.

its closely guarded what the correct score is to pass by the toc but i bet it changes depending on the amount of people say getting 10 or 9 or 8 etc they will only have so many spaces to fill on the assessment day where u do the actual tests so probably varies depending on the ability of the group you are competing against etc.

I doubt the average pass rate is high as the time is so short

Hello Phil,
I did the test yesterday morning but am sure it was 15 questions in 20 minutes, but I could be wrong and I also was only able to get to question 10, but I did double check each one before going to the next one.

Took the test today too, it was 20 questions in 15 mins, answered 11. The HR manger present told us the top 50 will be invited back on 12th and 13th to sit the other assessments.
Hope this helps.

If you only got to question 10 that is a poor result. I had 40 questions in 20 minutes, I went through all of them answering all the ones I was 100% were right, then through again and answered all the ones I thought were right and guessed the remaining ones I got 33 out of 40 and passed

I was there today as well - don't think I've ever experienced such a short 15 minutes! I feel confident in what I put down; I'm just not sure I put enough answers down overall!

One person in our group asked about mechanical tests and apparently these aren't done any more - next testing stage is group bourdon and reactions IIRC

Think the tests must have been different, you wouldn't have been able to guess these, no multi choice you were entering 6 digit codes from a list.

10 seems to be about average from the people I have spoken to who have taken the TPE test.

I asked the very same question. Would they take the top percentage and she advised the group, no if you pass, you will go to the next stage! That's when most fail and following the management interview at which point they can basically pick who is best suited for the role.

I'm assuming we will get the results today. We were advised they would be communicated this week.

You obviously didn't do the DFFT that TPE administer. It was 20 question and is designed not to be finished. People answer between 8-10 questions!

Hope we get the results today.

On the plus side it looks like I've also passed my Northern application. I've been asked to complete a online visual comparison test.

Hey, all this talk of answering 40 questions in 20 mins - that's definitely a different test! I answered 12 questions, feel unconfident about half of one of those answers but I'm happy with the others. Quickest 15 minutes of all my life!!

12 is good! Nobody answered more than 10 in my class.

Picking out sequences of numbers that don't match. I only answered 40, I got them all right but I don't think that's enough!
I'm still waiting my results from Wednesdays TPE assessment so fingers crossed on that one. These processes have been a lot harder than what I was faced joining the police and getting promoted.

Have you heard anything yet, HR said we should get the results this week?

I know it's a stressfull time going through the assessments but it's a bit rich of you two complaining about people helping others when you're both asking for that very same help in the link provided:roll:http://www.railforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=70497

I have to agree that is a bit off, I am more than happy to offer advice to anyone who came on to these forums wanting to become a guard. I am sure there are many drivers/trainees who feel the same, asking for help and telling people not to help others is not on at all. :|

No offence, but judging from this kind of response I would say you perhaps do not have the right attitude to become a train driver, it may sound harsh but the railway does not care about your dog. If you had simply phoned up on the day and said you were not in a fit state to take the tests they would have given you a new date.
