Ahhhhhh, cheers Tom.

Mart

And the same from me- I got it working, after actually thinking of un zipping it into c drive ;)

Is there a way which you can just search for a specific kind of fare on the system? e.g. Walk-Up fare , or First class upgrade?

How do TOC's (especially VT) work out the upgrade for FC, for a virgin value standard single? I once got quoted £42.90 (i was still a child) a few years ago, between Birmingham and Bristol, yet the child FOS today, after fare increases, is £28.50.

Sort of. You can double-click on a fare to bring up the details, then search for another destination and, if the exact same fare is found, it will go straight to the detail screen for that fare.

e.g. search for YRK to LDS , double click CDR, then I change 'Leeds' to DON, and it immediately takes you to the detail page for the CDR. If I change it to 'KGX' then there will be no match (no CDR) so it will take me to the screen showing all fares.

Virgin Values cannot be excessed in this way I believe.

You can either pay a Weekend First supplement (on a Sat/Sun) or you can purchase a new walk-on First Open Single, so 28.50 would have been correct, but cheaper if you asked to split the ticket at Cheltenham.

I can't see why they tried to charge 42.90, unless you failed to provide proof of age and that could have been an adult fare, but then it seems too low for BRI-BHM (£57), but too high for splitting at Cheltenham (£35), so I don't know.

Having not known about this, and expecting the difference to be a maximum of a pound, I just checked this option out, and i'm very surprised-

Today's child FOS Bimingham to Bristol Temple M:

£28.50

Split at Cheltenham Spa:

£17.65.

I actually remember getting a £20 note out of my pocket, to pay for the FC upgrade, with that being a price limit for the upgrade at that time.

This was all before i knew about Virgin Value first singles, which i was never offered on the journey i made between Preston, and Highbridge and Burnham, simply because it's not VT all the way.

Would members agree that TOC's should tell customers on a journey which is mostly formed of a train with FC facilities on board, that value first singles are available when you seperately book the express, and local trains?

What does split at Cheltenham mean?

It does exactly what it says in its name. ;)

All we mean is get two seperate tickets, splitting them at Cheltenham Spa

In this example, it's (Using my Avantix)

£10.60 Birmingham to Cheltenham Spa FOS and
£7.05 Cheltenham Spa to Bristol Temple M FDS.

[£17.65]

V

£28.50 FOS Birmingham to Bristol Temple M

Possibly yes, but sadly the awful (and now quite dated) trainline interface does not really allow for such a facility. It's just one of those things you have to 'know'.

A word of warning, some guards interpret the NCoC as you having no protection if your train is delayed using combinations of tickets for connecting trains. I strongly disagree with their interpretation, but you potentially could have problems if you experience a delay.

Basically, the fares in this country are a mess, a farce and - at least to newbies - a lottery, but if you understand the system and travel regularly you can save literally £hundreds per year by avoiding being overcharged.

Basically, it's like a supermarket where all the items are unpriced, and you have to ask someone at the checkout what the price is. If you pick up an orange and an apple and put them in the same bag, you would be charged, say 70p. But if you picked up an orange and an apple seperately into seperate bags and asked for them to be bought 'seperately', you'd only be charged 40p. Can you imagine that? Only in the rail industry ;)

Well i often do this (not the miss connecting train part though ;)) and i'm glad you've told me that.

When you say "some guards", are you reffering to a specific company (e.g. GNER) or the guards from some TOCs as a whole?

Well, it does vary by TOC, but it's a mixture really.

A GNER ticket inspector did once try to tell Gordon Prentice MP, his combination of a walk-on fare to Leeds and a GNER advance from Leeds to London, did not count as one journey (contrary to what the NCoC says) and that, when his Northern train was late, he (ie, us taxpayers) should foot the bill! He refused to pay, and I am not sure what happened next (anyone know??)

I guess GNER lost the case, otherwise we'd have heard about it!

Spliting at Taunton for Paignton-London saved 50p
FGW don't have many (any?) long distance day returns*, so there is little prospect for cheap combinations.

For some destinations, splitting at Didcot is useful (many PRIV holders do this because SDRs are a lot cheaper than SORs), but obviously not for the Berks & Hants.

(* Except on the Hereford route)

That's probably because Tiverton Parkway is slightly further away from Paddington than Taunton.
