They have to be able to, I believe, be able to attain 15% more than their maximum permitted speed officially...

100mph isn't the maximum speed something can do - it's the maximum permitted speed. Same as a HST is limited to 125mph but as we all know they are capable of much more!
IIRC, when HSTs were first introduced on the GW they regularily went over 125mph.

Max speed attained with a HST was about 143? Not sure.

Everything has 2 speeds, a design speed and a maximum speed. The Design speed is usually the speed it could run at, and the maximum is the one it is permitted to run at? Or is it the other way round?

Ive been in the cab of a 12 car 421/422/421 combo on a London Vic to Portsmouth Hbr/ Bognor with the needle well pass the 100 mph point on the Brighton Main Line through Horley. Shortly after we had to brake for the turnout to the slow lines at Three Bridges and the brakes smelt somewhat. On the same trip we touched 90 mph shortly before Amberley on the Arun Valley Line 15 mph above the line speed.
When i alighted at Arundel the driver had pulled back 9 mins of a 12 late departure from Vic.
Those were the days

Bit of a daft question maybe, but who are Grand Central?
I've heard about them recently but am still unsure who they are. Are they a proper TOC like Virgin and Northern, running passenger trains etc, or are they a leasing company like Riviera Trains?

Ta,

They are an independent company soon (May?) running services formed of Class 43 sets between Kings Cross and Sunderland via York.

Interesting - never heard about any of this!

Why are they running HSTs to and from London to Sunderland via York, when GNER aleady cover most if that route? :?

Kris: Is that Basingstoke? Looks a bit like it with platform 5 on the left and the gantry above with the fast line signal on the right. The thing is in the 2003 Guards Route Learning & Assesment Pack (still issued last year!) the up slow signal [YW23] has two feathers and a single theatre box rather than just a single theatre box like in your pics. Have the feathers now gone or isn't it Basing at all? :p[/QUOTE]

Hi - sorry for the delayed reply. Displaced conductor rail on my broadband connection. All pictures including the warped windscreen ones are P4 Southampton (The Swamp).

Yet another pointless post from you. How is that related Grand Central, really?

Grand Central have done the right thing by using HST IMHO but anyway....

I seriously doubt this will happen. Firstly, Class 442 were designed and conceived as 3rd Rail MUs because they're 3rd Rail they are thus limited to 100mph. That applies to all trains whether Eurostars, 377s whatever. 442s can be used as a sort of "Coaching Stock" if you like, in other words a Loco powering the train rather than the 442 motors it's self. Again, it's still limited to 100mph unless it's modified specifically. They are based on a Mk3 Shell and obviously Mk3 Coaching Stock is 125mph Top Speed. In theory it's possible but would mean a change in Bogies and a Crash Worthiness testing would be needed, both costing money. Due to many new H&SE Laws since the MU were originally built, it may not even be permitted to "uprate the speed". I think it would be much cheaper to source or even newly build other stock.

Secondly, the availability of 125mph Stock. They are plenty of Mk3s already stored and they're cheaper and much lighter than 442s, with or without Motors. They're cheaper charges and easy on maintenance. If you bring a ex-3rd Rail machine your going to encounter maintenance problems through incapabilities. Another reason for 442s staying down south.

Mk3 125mph Stock 2.

The only way 442s will be ran up North will either be if they're converted to 25kHZ or been towed to a scrapyard.
