Why, given the fact that the S-stock and 2009 stock were both built by Bombardier is the door opening chime different? Would there be any logical reason for this that I'm missing, or just a case of whatever parts available at the time?

I used two S-Stock trains again today (in fact, at Baker St I saw nothing but them) and I have to say I really like them. But I'm also quite a fan of the 378s (but the interior is nicer on the S-Stock IMO). All of my experiences of them seem to be good, and I hope the problems are long gone now. Can't wait for the S7s now.

Indeed, the only thing I dislike about the 378s are the seats, which are fixed in the S8s! :)

Despite the Amersham and Chesham etc residents spouting their views all the time that the new trains are rubbish especially since they take "double the time" because they call all stations etc... for the vast majority of people who use them south of Harrow they're excellent, and even north of Harrow they may not be as comfortable as the A stock in some circumstances but they ain't that bad!

What's the second pre production set? If it's 21003/4 that's been in traffic for a long time. I thought it was only the first set, 21001/2, that needed to come back?
21099/100 was the 2nd PP, now back at Derby being refreshed for passenger use.

21035/36
21045/46
21059/60 are S8-1 testing, and need to return.

21037/38
21047/48
21087/88 have not yet been delivered.

There might be fewer seats but because of the time I have used them, I've always got a seat - and the extra space (width of carriage) means people can space out nicely and it feels very much more relaxed than when people are bunched up.

What's more, I can board at one end and easily walk through to alight at the other!

I am looking forward to using them in the summer, if we get really hot weather, too.

The 378's and S-stock are wonderful trains. For the first time travelling around London can be quite pleasant! :D The lack of seats doesn't bother me, as I don't mind having to stand when making short-distance journeys. Those making long-distance journeys from outer London should still be able to get a seat on the way to work.

Compare that to the 2009 stock. Those trains are cramped, claustrophobic and dark. The "air cooling" system doesn't make any noticeable difference!! (I actually think the trains are warmer than the ones they replaced). Travelling during the evening peak is no nicer an experience than before. It's no different to travelling on the Central or Piccadilly lines.

The 2009 stock is definitely warmer than the old stock. It didn't used to be a line that got that hot compared to, say, the Circle with stock that had sod all ventilation. Now it is up there, until the S7s arrive.

The '09s are not fitted with cooling equipment for the passenger areas, they simply move the tunnel air around.

The first time I used the 2009 stock I was quite alarmed by the hot air being blown out from under the floor which you can sometimes feel from the platform.

The S stock was certainly being used to its potential today.
I was at Lords for the cricket & walked back to Baker Street afterwards for circle/met line to Kings cross just after 6pm.

There was a huge crowd waiting to access the circle line platforms - it was solid back to the ticket barriers so you could not get through them. The football at Wembley had finished & the west Ham fans were travelling back on the Jubilee/Met line at the same time everyone was leaving Lords so Baker Street was rammed solid with people waiting to get on the circle line platforms & I suspect the same problems at St johns wood on the Jubilee line as well.

Anyway I saw that a Met Line train was due in 2 minutes so went down to Platform 3 as that staircase was not blocked by the crowd of people.
An S stock service was just leaving - it was literally rammed for the whole length of the train including the walkthrough sections between the carriages which would not have been possible in the old A or C stock. It was announced that another train was 1 minute behind it. I went to the far end of the platform & managed to get on there as as lot of people got off the last coach but only about a dozen others had bothered to walk that far down the platform. The rest of the train was also rammed solid inside. plus the aircon made it a comfortable temperature despite there being so many people inside.

S7 train 21305/06 was delivered today containing S8 car 23045! So it was an S7+1 this time! Formed:
21305-22305-23045-24305-24306-25306-22306-21306

23045 will now be slotted into S7-1 21045/46 to make a proper S8.

So that I make sure I ride an S7 and not an S8 next Saturday, how will I know which is which? I realise it comes down to carriage numbers.

The S7s are not in service, just yet! They will initially be for the Hammersmith & City Line (Hammersmith-Moorgate) and comprise an internal layout with all longitudinal seating.

S8 trains are already in operation on the Metroplitan Line and will very shortly provide the full service. These have a mixture of transverse and longitudinal seating.

Once all are delivered, it'll be very, very simple:
Metropolitan Line service: S8
Circle, District or H&C service: S7

but as said, for now, only S8 in service, only on the Met.

21001 / 2 through to 21115 / 6 = Metropolitan S8.

21301 / 2 through to 21565 / 6 = Everything else S7.

While I gathered the Metropolitan Line trains were longer, the carriage numberings makes the distinction very clear now, thanks! I shall just remember anything less than 21200, simple as.

The train had an intermitant fault with the cab CCTV, it was changed with T455 at Baker Street so there was no loss to the Chesham service. 21115/16 continued to Uxbridge.

Another (47/48) is due tonight/tomorrow.

This leaves only 37/38 still to be delivered.

PP1 (01/02) and PP2 (99/100) are outstanding to be re-delivered as S8s.
35/36, 59/60 are still currently formed of 7 cars for testing, the outstanding cars will come within S7 delivery trains.

A surprise today, was seeing S7 21301/302 running empty between Moorgate-Hammersmith in daylight, prior to the "preview service" starting.

21087 also hasn't been delivered yet, but it is at the test track. The 8th car for 21045 has arrived with an S7, but that unit has not entered service yet and might still be doing testing as an S8-1.

No it didn't; it was sent out ecs from Baker Street - everyone was turfed off it and the set locked. I think it reversed at Harrow on the Hill for Neasden as I saw it there ( Harrow ) at around 17.20
Apologies, upon investigating further, 21116 (the leading S Stock car, not an R Stock!) was changed-over with T455 and was indeed sent empty to Harrow, empty to Neasden.
T455 at Baker St pfm1 became T470 fast to Chesham, arriving 11mins late at Chesham.

T455 17:09 slow Uxbridge was therefore cancelled.

The confusion was around differing reports made by Service Control and NCC.

I did finally ride the S8 stock yesterday. I hoped for a through journey from Northwood to Euston Square. However, they forced us to change at Harrow-on-the-Hill, and being early evening they all seemed to be terminating at Baker Street. They remind me of london Overground class 378 internally.

Are the S7 units being delivered by the same route (via Aylesbury etc) as the S8 units?
