Does anybody know where I can find prices of zone 6 extension tickets?

I have a monthly zones 1-6 travel card and I need to go to newbury race course station (from london paddington) for a 3 days in a couple of weeks time, I would like to know the daily cost of a return extension from zone 6.

I will pre traveling pre 9:30 so am guessing this will be a peak ticket too. Just trying to work out if it would be cheaper to drive.

Thanks

David

What time do you need to arrive at Newbury Racecourse?

Reason for asking is there may be split ticket opportunities if you journey straddles Peak and Off-Peak.

Without a split the Boundary Zone 6 - Newbury Racecourse Anytime Day Return is £25.40.

Prices for Boundary Zone tickets are, as far as I'm aware, not listed anywhere online. You'd need a copy of the National Fares Manual (published 3 times a year) which will set you back around £14 (inc P&P) for each copy.

Best to just ask here if you don't want to fork out £45 a year for information that, IMHO, should be freely available in the public domain.

What RJ said in terms of where to find it. A standard (Peak) day return is £25.40 by the way :)

It's a bit cheaper if you split at Slough:

Boundary Zone 6 - Slough SDR £5.70
Slough - Newbury Racecourse SDR £13.90

Total £19.60

The train you're on doesn't need to stop at Slough either since one of your tickets (the monthly travelcard) is a season ticket and the others aren't.

How does one check a BZ6 fare on NRE? I just get "no station found". Specific stations are no use where there are different routes. The last fare I wanted to check was Banbury with a view to splitting with a Gold Card to Leamington Spa. I got different results for West Drayton & West Ruislip so I was none the wiser. Yes you can check with the booking clerk but it seems more polite to do one's own research in advance.

Incidentally, I often travel with someone who has a BZ5 ticket and we increasingly find the prices are identical.

PS First post - thanks for all the useful tips garnered via google - fellow traveller particularly grateful to Mike Wh for Oyster info.

That would have to be done by 'phone - with, no doubt, varying rates of success. As I said earlier, there is nowhere online that will show Boundary Zones fares. Short of forking out for copies of the National Fares Manual CD-ROMs, your best bet is to ask here or at a station ticket office/window. That said even some ticket clerks struggle with BZ fares!

May I just ask for clarification about this point, because I thought that the no need to stop rule only applied to the season and the immediate extending ticket ( ie the BZ6 overlap )? If the BZ extension then becomes effectively part of the season ticket, allowing the non-stopping at Slough as this suggests, then that opens up a number of other interesting splitting possibilities both here and elsewhere...

From NRCoC:
19. Using a combination of tickets
You may use two or more tickets for one journey as long as together they cover the entire
journey and one of the following applies:
<snip>

(c) one of the tickets is a Season Ticket (which for this purpose does not include Season Tickets or travel passes issued on behalf of a passenger transport executive or local authority) or a leisure travel pass, and the other ticket(s) is/are not.

My interpretation is that if one is a season and the others are not, then the train does not need to call at any station where you change from one ticket to the next.

Yes, agreed - but I'm wondering whether, because it is worded "journey", they would expect the train to have to stop at the second splitting point ( Slough ) since the season technically only goes up to BZ6?

( Perhaps we should continue this on a separate thread; don't want to confuse the OP? )

This has cropped up before. Someone contacted ATOC (about 2 years ago) and they agreed with our interpretation. I would start a new thread but I don't believe there is anything new to add that hasn't been discussed before.

My suggestion to the OP would be to aim to get a train that stops at Slough to avoid potential arguments, because the rule is complex and not many guards/RPIs/experts fully understand it.

The word ticket being pluralised means that the rule needs to be complied with only once during a single journey.

They can't have it both ways. If the rule was interpreted to require one season and one non-season at each overlap point (rather than one season and all the others non-season) then that may open other loopholes. For example seasons from London to Leighton Buzzard and from Bletchley to Birmingham, plus day tickets to bridge the gap (stations picked at random to illustrate the principle, I've no idea whether this would be cheaper or more expensive than through tickets in this example, or even if said tickets exist at all).
