Yes it is possible, for example there is an Off Peak Return (SVR) from Boundary Zone 6 to Didcot.

You've not told us your destination but you can look up the relevant fare for your journey, and see if there is an SVR for it (for most, there won't be), on a website created by a member of this forum www.brfares.com

sorry my destination is reading

I would want to go via paddington. I checked the site mentioned and the only SVR is via ascot which is the waterloo route. its also hardly any different to 2x singles via paddington (wtih gold card discount applied)

how come some routes allow this and others dont?

Short answer: because they can do what they want

The Train Companies are less likely to offer SVRs for journeys perceived as short, perhaps because they think people are less likely to return a different day and are maybe concerned with the risk of fraud.

If cheaper than singles, buy to Didcot and start/finish short.

thanks for the reply. As i cant buy the zone boundary ticket online am i able to buy a ticket online from say west drayton to reading instead? I ask because I have RSH credit I want to use!

my guess is the train i take needs to stop at west drayton for me to take advantage of that so I cant use the direct paddington to reading service?

Yes, there's no requirement to use two Zonal tickets as you hold one Season ticket, which may be combined with any number of non-Seasons for one journey.

There's no need for the train to call anywhere.

See our RailUK Fares & Ticketing Guide > 1.6 Split ticketing

1.6.2.3 Clause 19(c) - Season Tickets and Rovers
If you have a season ticket (which is not issued by a passenger transport executive such as nTrain or TfGM, although TfL tickets ARE fine) you may combine this with any number of non-season tickets and use these on trains that don't stop where you change from one ticket to another...
