Hi. I am wanting to travel from Zell am Ziller in Austria on the Zillertal Bahn to Vipitino in Italy. The OBB website can only sell a ticket to Brenner on the border. Any ideas on how to purchase cross border tickets for a return journey on the above route and how much?

From Brennero to Vipitino is only 18 minutes. The italian FS website gives no prices for any train on that part. The website listed below gives a one way price of 3.50 euros.

AFAIK you cannot buy through returns-nor singles. This is becse:
the IT part is a kind of ''Verkehrsverbund'' SüdTirol-which works similar to those in Germany and covers all local fares on a zonal base for train and bus (and tram). But the nasty part is it is all loaded on local smartcards of which i do not know all full details. I thnk they call it mobilcard. IF you also STAY in the area it becomes much easier, as most Hotels etc can issue their guests with kind of free or very cheap local cards.
I just read that there is now also a 5 eur add-on for all local transport IF one uses the OeBB/DB through IC-trains from München via Innsbruck to Italy, but I guess for this short trip this wont pay off.
ALSO note that IN every Austrian province=land there are also local fares, similar to Tarifverbund, which covers all normal lines (not the tipical uponthemountain ''danglebahn'' lines) and may work out a lot cheaper as the official OeBB fares. F.e. there is a 7-day all-lines ''rover'' type of weekly for around 70 eur. This is not much more as in fact the max. return in 1 day.

The website linked by Groningen also says that ordinary tickets can be bought from machines at station. 22km @ 15ct/km rounds up to 3.50 each way.

Worth looking at www.vvt.at for the regional Austrian fares.

I have a price of 15,80 euros from Zell am Ziller to Brennero with only a change in Jenbach; traveltime is 2 hours.

Is Brennero a place where I would have to change trains to go to Vipitino then? Could I buy the last leg of the journey on the train if it carries on to Vipitino?

Yes, most connections are change at Brenner between the 'cross Innsbruck' Austrian locals and the Italian locals.

most connections seem to be 6 mins - time to buy a local Italian ticket at Brenner (just) I would have thought.

If not just spend a period of time at Brenner watching the through traffic and give yourself time to buy a local ticket from a machine. After all it's not the least scenic place in the world being an Alpine pass village

And if you select 'other fares', the day ticket price comes up (31 euro) thus covering return trip and any extras in the day (Innsbruck tram ride?)

I once tried and failed to make this 6-minute connection (or whatever it was at the time, maybe 5 years ago) between the local Austrian and Italian trains. Brenner is a large but mostly empty station. It took all of the 6 minutes to locate the right ticket machine, which I recall was not very user-friendly (maybe coins only, or no change given, or something). I then waited for the next southbound train, which was one of the longer-distance through trains where the ticket I had just purchased was not valid.

Looks like it will be a hire car job. I really wanted to use train as it's a journey I did many years ago as a child. It seem though that integrated travel is not just a failure in this country. Regarding the day ticket, is that valid on the Zillertal too? What's it's name so I can find it?

See the link in post 4. There is an English version. Click on the journey planner and then on All Fares for the journey you want.

In the drop down box, day ticket is Tages-Ticket and weekly is Wochen-Ticket - Tirol means all of Tirol, and at 58.80 a week it's ridiculously cheap. Not valid on IC/RJ but that's no great issue in Tirol. Valid on trains, trams and buses including the ZTB (diesel only I presume) but I suspect not the Achenseebahn.

That's integrated local transport at its best IMO, it just doesn't work internationally.

Alternatively, the OeBB website eventually gave me a through fare from Jenbach to Vipiteno for 18.50 each way, which would solve the problem of the tight connection at Brenner. I imagine you could buy one from Innsbruck for less but the site is so clunky I wouldn't bother checking.

Ironically it's integrated transport within countries (and to some extent train-specific ticketing) that is knackering the traditionally-easy TCV through ticketing.
