What I mean by this is as follows, although this is a tame example. On a LNWR service last week with advance purchase 1st class ticket (was cheaper than standard). Guard walked through inspecting tickets, took mine, looked at it hard, circled something, gave it back and moved on. Looked at what was circled, it was yesterday's date! A genuine error which the guard did not take issue with. I am sure there are better/funnier examples that you all have of getting off at the wrong station miles from your intended destination, missing trains because of strange reasons etc etc

I have many, many stories of this. One that sticks out in my memory is walking through the gateline (accidentally, I may add) at Wigan NW with a ticket from just over a month ago... from Portsmouth Harbour to London Waterloo!

I've also been on a VTWC service where I was asked to present my railcard and pulled my newly expired railcard out of my wallet - which was accepted without hesitation.

Maybe some guards/gateline on here can attest to whether these are likely seen as wrong and the conflict is simply wished to be avoided on a busy service - or whether the brain is on pure autopilot and you are just looking for a coloured credit card sized token?

My friend who collects tickets had his collection out when the guard came through and he couldn’t find the valid ticket for that journey but the guard just said he probably had it in there somewhere and continued on.

I've had this multiple times also - after approximately 10 to 20 seconds of faffing with my ticket pile I am given 'the nod'.

Strangest one I ever had was boarding a 156 at Glasgow Central, platform end screen and train destination showing Whifflet. Something mumbled over the PA as the train starts to fill & departs. Train reaches Eglinton Street and instead of turning left onto the WCML towards Polmadie, it goes straight on up the hill towards Pollokshields. Go find the guard, "I take it this isn't going to Whifflet?" "No, it got cancelled & it's going to Kilmarnock" Me & another passenger ended up in a taxi home from Barrhead - at that point in time Scotrail control used to steal stock from the Whifflet route to fill in for failures on the other south-side lines, on this occasion it must have been a Killie train that failed.

I was pressed for time catching the last Birmingham train from Sheffield about eight years ago after enjoying the bonhomie and more pints of Old Rosie than were necessarily wise in one of the hostelries in the city centre, and frantically made the dash across the footbridge to the furthest island from the concourse where southbound Crosscountry services normally depart from, having neglected to consult the departures board in my haste. Turns out the last Birmingham train of the night departs northbound to run via the "old road" to Chesterfield, and had done so from the platform closest to the concourse. I'd actually heard it departing as I was halfway across the footbridge without realising what it was.

I spent that night sobering up unwillingly on Crewe station until the early morning ATW service to Birmingham, having subsequently decided to make it as far south towards Birmingham as possible on any service available.

Managed to miss the last Newport to Bristol train a month or so back on a Sunday due to a last minute platform alteration that I didn't notice because I had my headphones on, and as it was the last train on a Sunday there weren't many people about for me to notice heading to a different platform! My phone was dead and I had no cash on me. And I don't really know Newport that well.
Had to get a taxi from the rank outside the station, and got the driver to stop on the way at a cash point. Cost me £70. Lesson learned and I'll actually pay attention next time!

Based on the reputation of the place, you wouldn't want to, especially not after dark. o_O ;)

And a £70 taxi fare is certainly a nasty sting on the wallet. I've had similar, though to a lesser extent, after discovering the Midland Metro was closed for engineering work while trying to get back to Birmingham after a gig in Wolverhampton; and from Stockport to Macclesfield after a late running TPE service to Manchester following an ill-advisedly late session with friends in York resulted in me missing the last Saturday night train back to Macc.

I suspect he hadn't noticed. It's normal practice for LNR guards to circle the date when checking tickets.

Along similar lines I unintentionally travelled for about a month (3 return journeys I think) on an expired YP Railcard years ago. Fortunately it was pointed out by Manc Picc ticket office rather than a prosecution-happy RPI.

I got very lucky once, travelling from Burnley I missed the connection at Preston but thought it was still in the platform so I ran across the bridge and jumped on it, unfortunately it was a northbound and arriving at Lancaster I discovered I had missed the last south beyond Preston. Virgin got me a taxi Brum to Watford, they had no obligation to and am not sure if they misunderstood what I had done but I was very grateful.

P.S., didn't claim delay repay :lol::lol::lol:

Not my fail but I do remember a gentleman who didn't intend to travel helping his wife with her luggage on a London to Manchester VTWC service, misjudging the departure time and getting stuck on a train that he didn't intend to travel on or indeed have a ticket for... Unusually there wasn't announcement, either automated or by the train manager before we departed. I was sat opposite and had to break the news that the first stop was Stoke-on-Trent! Apparently he'd just nipped out of the office on his lunch break. The train manager was actually very helpful and and arranged for him to travel back from Stoke on the next available departure...

A month or so ago when staying in Hayle, we got the train to St Erth to go to St Ives.
On the return from St Erth, a HST turned up, instead of what I expected it would be, like a 156? or suchlike, so me and my 8 Yr old lad walked down the train to look at the First Class coaches and test out the leather seats.
Train gets to Hayle, which of course is barely 10 minutes away and when the train stopped, we were miles down the train from the coaches at the platform, as only the first four coaches would fit. Cue panic as we sprint through the train, stopping to open each door on the way and trying to open the door where we thought the platform was. Thankfully the Guard saw as she said only another coach to go through...
My wife and daughter are doing the "Didn't you hear the announcement?" when we got on. Cue red face and ridicule. Next stop was Redruth I think and I had the car keys, which I was contemplating lobbing out the window to her on the platform!

we have all done it! I might have got on the wrong train at Euston and only realised when, stood at the door to alight at MK, found myself hurtling through at 100mph! First stop Warrington..................

Regularly use the Cross city line and normally get on at New Street. This time I'd been to see someone in Aston so was walking to the station when I saw the train come in, legged it up the stairs and got on.

Of course it was the Walsall train instead of Lichfield/four oaks! Had to get off at Witton and walk back to Aston station as the train going in that direction had just left.

Would imagine it's not as half as bad as other train mix ups from people on this forum but still frustrating.

Before the days of automated barriers I walked off quite a few trains showing my building pass rather than my season without being challenged. On the other hand the building security staff never let me in on the basis of my season ticket.

Accidentally managed to let my tickets from London to Newcastle slide out of my wallet on the tube. Thankfully some grovelling to King's Cross ticket office saw me get lucky and have a handwritten replacement issued, saving me £85.

My biggest fails have really happened abroad...

Highlight was rocking up to Basel SNCF for a train that was booked to call at Basel St-Johann, but in this magic strike timetable, skipped it and went direct to St Louis in France. I'd ignored multiple screens that said 'ST LOUIS MULHOUSE STRASBOURG' in boarding in the naive assumption I was right but thankfully the cost was limited to a couple of euros getting the tram back into Basel and an hour of my life thanks to an understanding conductor

I was out on an Interrail trip and decided to get the train/ferry from Copenhagen down to Hamburg. This is quite a fun service in that the entire train rolls onto the ferry between Denmark and Germany. When you are on the ferry you are asked to leave the trainset and lounge in the passenger area of the ferry upstairs. I was playing around on my laptop on the sundeck and charging it. Just before it was time to get back on the ferry I went to the toilet and left my laptop to charge for a moment intending to pick it up on my way past back to the train.

When I was back on the train I had the horrible moment of realisation that I had forgotten my laptop. Luckily, the train stops at a station just outside the ferry terminal on the German side (Puttgarden) so I got off and ran (and I mean ran) back to the ferry terminal and boarded again to get my laptop. The staff had found it for me whilst cleaning and I was happily reunited and started to head back to the train station.

My nightmare nearly over, I strolled down to the disembarkation ramp of the ferry to find it closing and mooring lines being released. The reality of my new ferry-based life set in. I spent the following four hours travelling back to Denmark, and then Germany again on the ferry without a ticket. Fortunately the next train to Hamburg was travelling on my next return ferry trip and the Deutsche Bahn conductor on my previous train had nicely contacted the present one so I could still use my reservation on this reservation required service. I sat down, made myself at home on the train - complete with laptop - only to realise I had left my favourite jacket on the ferry.

I'm usually pretty switched on, but that was a bad day after three nights of terrible sleep in the seated portion of sleeper services across Norway and Sweden.

I'd been to watch rugby at Hull's kc arena and had many beers. I remember feeling aggrieved on getting to the station that there were no direct trains back to Leeds. It needed a change...

Then an almighty memory blank...

I woke up travelling north at Northallerton. I'd somehow left the first train somewhere (Selby? Doncaster?) and blundered on to another. Close to £100 for the taxi back!

Quite a recent one.

Drove to Man Picc heading on a Scotland bash. Had advances booked for a while, and been looking forward to the trip for a long time.

Parked, got breakfast, went to the ticket barrier, swore loudly upon realising said advances were still at home!

Drove home to get them, got back in time fot the train 90 minutes later and-due to an understanding conductor-managed to travel on that service. (Once he'd stopped laughing...:D)

Couple of years ago I had a split ticket to get me from Watford junction to Glasgow (Watford to Crewe on Milton Keynes anytime and advance to Crewe with another to Glasgow. My colleague offered to run me to the station rather than the shuttle bus. Only problem was he dropped me at Kings Langley but my train did not stop there. Thought I had plenty of time to catch connecting but ended up watching all my possible trains pass by.
Realised I was then struggling to get home. I had an important work call in morning and another meeting in the office first thing.

Got to Milton Keynes OK and the Guard on Train to Crewe permitted me to travel with the Advance ticket. She had a bad day and felt sorry for me too. 9pm at Crewe with only possibility now being the Highland sleeper but nobody could tell me availability on the seats. (Sleeper said it was too late to check and Ticket office at Crewe was closed)
Went for a walk and some dinner and came back near Midnight. Sleeper arrives. Get on to find I am at the wrong end of the 16 Carriage train. Guard tells me to go to ticket office!! I tell him sorry its been closed for hours. I grab a seat and he comes round after 10 minutes to sell me ticket. machine would not work so decides it is too much hassle and lets me travel for free.
Next downside is that you have to change at Edinburgh for the Fort William seats. 1 hour on a cold platform. Guard allowed me off at Queen street and I just went home to my bed. Missed my call and office meeting as I was absolutely shattered. One upside was it cost me nothing extra to get back

Every year I do an All Line Rover, usually in March.

This year, my start date was March 2nd. also, the day that The Beast from The East hit us.....

My original plan, starting in Weston-super-Mare was to head up the East Coast Main Line, visiting Grantham and York, and then return home.

Issues began as we approached Didcot. It was announced that Paddington was closed due to dangerous conditions, and we would instead terminate at Reading.
Then we were held at Didcot, being told that Reading was now gridlocked.
I decided to change here, and try and head to Oxford, and get to London from there. Waited for ages for the train to Oxford (showing on the board as "due"), but it never came. Instead, I gave up, and took the next train back to Bristol. I should have quit there and then,

Upon arriving in Bristol, I noticed that there was a delayed XC service to Plymouth. Unable to resist the lure of the Dawlish Coast and Devon Banks in the snow, I got on. We made it to Plymouth with no issues, despite the snow. I then took the same train back from Plymouth. Since all was now going well, instead of doing the sensible thing and heading home, I got overconfident.

I noticed from checking times online that I could change at Exeter onto the Waterloo service. I figured I could go as far as Basingstoke, then head back to Reading, then get a GWR service home.

Then we got stuck outside Templecombe. Frozen points. after a long delay, we reversed. All the way back to Yeovil Junction, where we were told we would be diverted via Yeovil Pen Mill. This pleased me, as I had never been on the Yeovil curve before! After more long delays, we were off again, but I realised that I would never make it to Basingstoke. So I got out at Westbury, where I knew I could get a train to Bristol, or Taunton.

The next service was a GWR to Exeter, stopping at Taunton, so I got on that. I was then announced that we would also be stopping at Frome. Then things got really bad. Due to multiple points failures, we got stuck at Frome for an hour. Eventually, we returned to Westbury, and were told that the train would now run via Bristol. Well OK, at least I would be heading home.

We then crawled to Bristol. Multiple unplanned stops along the way. Finally, upon the approach to Temple Meads, we stopped again. Station gridlocked. Multiple frozen points. No trains departing to anywhere. We were stuck outside the station for an hour.

By this time I realised I would not be getting home, and booked myself a Travelodge for the night.

The nest day I returned to Temple Meads. Waited two hours for a train back to Weston-super-Mare. which then took an hour instead of the usual 30 minutes. Then I went home to bed. I didnt even bother getting up the next day, so the first 3 days of my All Line Rover were basically ruined.
I resumed on Sunday, with much of the snow having already melted, but with GWR still using it as an excuse to cancel multiple services (actually caused by a driver shortage)

Last year travelling from Cambridge to London I bought a ticket from the then new TVMs to what I what I thought was London Terminals. Got out at Kings Cross, pulled out my ticket and then realised it was GA Only.

The sodding TVM had the Any Permitted options on the wrong side to usual. Anyone that used Cambridge last year may recall there was a period a few weeks after the new TVMs were installed when a piece of laminate was placed at eye level on the machines to tell folk what they had to do if they were using Great Northern, so I can't able been interested the only victim

Thankfully for me it was a Saturday morning and it was the only time I have ever seen the barriers at the GN platforms open. Sorry GN. I accidentally diddled you out of your RSP that day thanks to a GA TVM.

The options on the TVM have been redesigned now so that you have to select the route before the ticket. So all's well that ends well I suppose.

Misread the timetable for trains home from a party at a friend's place in Brighton and turned up at the station to catch a late night train which it turned out ran all week except for Saturday nights.
Station closed, so spent a couple of hours in a bus shelter outside waiting for the first train at 4-something AM instead. Thankfully it was mild weather!

A couple of times i've misjudged the walk to the station from my house to find my train departing as i go down the stairs to the platform... You would think a railwayman would understand the importance of a departure time!

I am usually very precious about double checking these kind of things, so I've got no stories of note.

Though I do recall when the Night Tube finally started, a few of us decided to go out late just because we could. As I'm never that used to being up past midnight in London, I was getting the tube home on my own to North Greenwich and promptly fell asleep and ended up in Stratford. Then I got on the next one, fell asleep again and woke up in Wembley. So I jumped on again, guess what - I fell asleep and woke up in West Ham. Stupidly, I got the next one and sat down - of course I fell asleep and woke up in Waterloo. Then I decided I should stand from there to North Greenwich, and finally made it there past 4am (having originally started my journey around 1.30am).

My friends described it, once I told them, as a 'drunken pendulum gradually getting closer to the resting point'.

Mine was a "near miss" which would have been pretty disastrous.

On a family holiday in Scotland, staying in Inverness. Did the "day trip" to Thurso. I misread the timetable for the train back (read the Kyle time rather than Thurso!). Was convinced it was 17.50; it was actually 17.35. Fortunately we were back on the train by 17.30.

Would otherwise have meant two empty B&B rooms in Inverness and finding two in Thurso! And enormous grief from parents!

Arrive at Tonbridge, monitor said next train was calling at Paddock Wood. Got on train. Onboard PA muffled and unintelligible. Gets up from seat approaching Paddock Wood and noticed train wasn't slowing down, whizzed through station and didn't stop until Ashford. Can only think that the page I saw on monitor was the second page. Had to get train back from Ashford to Paddock Wood, costing me about an hour. On plus side, didn't get copped for the excess and added a few yards of virgin track (Down Through line at Paddock Wood).

Not mine, but a former colleague's...

There is an ICE International service which links Amsterdam, Utrecht and Arnhem with the German cities of Oberhausen, Duisburg, Düsseldorf, Cologne and Frankfurt. This ICE service can also be used for domestic travel in the Netherlands free of charge if you're a season ticket holder, or by paying a small supplement fare if you don't.

Back then, we were working for a client in Utrecht. This guy lives in a small town near Arnhem, and had timed his commute so he could use the ICE International service between Arnhem and Utrecht.

One day, he called in: "I'll be a few hours late today". When he got to the platform at Arnhem that morning, he didn't look at the screens. He just boarded the white ICE train... which turned out to be the morning train to Germany, which was delayed. Luckily the guards were very helpful in getting him back to Arnhem.

Left my phone once a few years ago on the shuttle to Sheppy. Didn't realise until I was on the way to get the Maidstone Barracks service.

Thank goodness I had a Kent Rover and there was an off duty SE RPI sitting opposite on my 375.

Managed to get the track ticked off in both directions between Sittingborne and Gillingham.

I blame the early start to tick off the AM Minster curve service and a 395 to Minster for the lack of attention!
