The trouble with Spain is that it its full of UK ex-pats.

I went to Chicago in 2016 and it was the right mix of hustle and bustle and the weather wasn't bad either.

I did say it was a locals thing. I was there when 9-11 occurred. It was strange with no aircraft flying anywhere. For 6 days.

I believe the requirement is the ability to speak the national language. Given the variety of languages spoken in different parts I'd guess that the prime language in the canton where you intend to live would be the actual requirement. IME many Swiss speak two of their languages and some manage three.

No reason to panic, fortunately there is no such regulation on language.

I love the UK, so wouldn’t really look to move away. However;

1) Due to fortunate personal circumstances Italy is the most likely place I would end up living. It’s beautiful and the South where I would be has a good lifestyle, cheap cost of living and cool, cheap trains. However, there are downsides; I think winter there would still be pretty miserable as the houses there are tiled to stay cool in summer, so it’s not as cosy as being in the UK, Southern Italy also has its fair share of issues just below the surface and there are many things that I would miss about life in the UK.

2) More speculatively; I’ve visited 38 countries now and there’s only one that’s really jumped out at me as somewhere that I could happily live year round, and seems pretty flawless, and that’s Canada. It’s like a friendly more sensible US, is beautiful and has clearly defined and spectacular seasons. I might miss rail travel though as the network there isn’t developed to the same extent as here.

3) Sweden, similar to above really but with less conviction. It came across as a really nice and beautiful place. Many people speak English so that helps.

Oh yes, that kept me on my toes when we journeyed through Switzerland. I conversed French in Geneva, German in Chur and - at the delighted request of a restaurant owner - English at the Italian border. Apparently the restaurant owner tired of hearing French and German.

Barcelona ! -maybe if you were recognised as a local , you might escape the endemic bag thieves and pickpockets - I speak with some experience - bag nicked in an instant and within some hours an attempted wallet theft. (I did have the pleasure of smacking this attempted thief though) - blights an otherwise fine city.

Having not yet seen a lot of Europe I wouldn't want to move continent. For me,

I don't like much heat. Ireland and Scotland are too depressing and grey at the same time. Sweden is very pleasant too. CH has the better railway system and the feeling of being rural but quite close to a lot of places, but Norway is mostly just...rural. I like the reserved, mountainous outdoor oriented life and the biking trails and the great roads as well. The UK has none of these. I'd learn German but for Norway, they speak good English.

Having spent a lot of time in many countries over the years, I find people are important, cost of living and food.

1 - Portugal - lovely helpful friendly people, really low cost of living & great food. I could afford to eat out every day!
2 - France - wonderful people, you can find cheaper places to live, great food
3 - Germany in the Black Forest area only - nice people. affordable, good food

It was for me too. For a brit, it felt quite comfortable and relaxed with the benefits of beautiful surroundings.

Having moved to the Isle of Man in February 2020 (for my wife's work), I wouldn't really move anywhere else now. Crime is practically non-existent and there's the 'traa dy liooar' you only ever really experience living on a small island; what's the rush if the furthest you can drive in a straight line is 30 miles. The fact the automated next-stop announcement on the bus says hello to the fairies at Fairy Bridge always makes me smile.

It's certainly not perfect though. Getting on and off the island is the big issue- it adds at least £500 to any holiday and, especially in winter, you have to build lots of contingency into any plans because of the weather. The fog here is so thick in winter it has its own legend, Mannanan's Cloak.

If I was going to move anywhere else, it'd be the Mornington Peninsula south of Melbourne in Australia. It's where I spent my early childhood and it's been far too long since I went back.

While there's still bushland (many trees), you'd find the MP significantly more urbanised than when you left.

Yeah, I still have family down there between Somerville and Tyabb and they say that the urban sprawl has stretched a lot even in the last ten years.

A far better choice than the North Island.

The bad news is that my designer Australia would be the Blue Mountains with a 100km long Bells Beach. The nearest City would be Adelaide but Id keep it at least 200 Km away. Sydney would be demolished. New Adelaide would get to keep the Melbourne Trams. There would have to be a major fly elimination program and the Kuala Bears would certainly need to up their game then it might enter my top 5.

Atr least you are on a railway line: to Stony Point, with a one or two-car 'unit' Sprinter railcar when it's not interrupted by level crossing removal works on the electrified Frankston line.

The more I watch the Tour de France on television, the more I realise that geographically, topographically & scenically France is a fabulous country. I’m constantly saying ‘why haven’t I seen that before’. The Tour de France is France’s best tourist advert.

Yes France's scenic diversity is seriously impressive. However many of the most spectacular areas are close to its frontiers (ie on the periphery) and I suspect many non ski-ing French people rarely visit them. It's a big country with a long coastline which must generate more tourism activity than do the mountain regions.

Totally agree about Le Tour as an advert, I've been enjoying it on TV for over 40 years and always look forward to the mountain stages just for the views.

For me, my top 3 will be Gibraltar, Estonia and Sweden.

Gibraltar is a British tax haven which hasn't been ruined and is re-enforced by the referendum showing people's desire to remain British.

Estonia is a cheap EU country which has a strong innovative industry.

Sweden is a place where I can do everything I want.
