Hail everyone!
Just a rapid post being written at home on one of the Wincor/Nixdorf "Beetle" (A.K.A. PC-based EPoS) machines that I bought from Woolworths a couple of weeks ago, though posted from the Library as always. Although the things are a little slow - Having only a Celeron 455 CPU and 128Mb of RAM in them - They're still good little boxes that should prove perfect for text editing, data transfer between USB media and 3.25" floppies, and hosting simple network file/print services on! 8)

Although - As anyone who keeps an eye on my Weblogs will have already seen - It's been a real uphill struggle for me to install Windows on this thing as there is no free bus space for a CD-ROM drive, but I managed it in the end...Even if it meant having to install Windows XP Home SP2 in the end, insted of the XP Professional SP1 setup that I much prefer!

I was going to attach a couple of photos showing the till running XP, but I've just powered my camera phone off and it takes an age to boot up again. On the other hand though, I saw an advertisement the other day that instantly reminded me of Brandon and a lot of the other - More dedicated - Enthusiasts on here, and I simply couldn't resist taking a snap... hock::razz:

I've got an HP Artist Edition (dv2899) Pavilion which is very pretty...

but after 3 months of having it, the inverter board has gone! Gah! Now I have to ring dreaded HP support, who will no doubt claim that I'm out of warranty or somesuch!

But why?

Why pay more for something that looks fancier, but has the same components/spec as a much cheaper laptop.. its a waste of money.

Personally I wouldnt buy a dell though!

I have about 8 computers although computer 3 has broken down and a computer called "Orac" after the blakes 7 computer (It was a barebones cube system)...also Zen the computer I found dumped outside.
Three I built myself and a laptop with no screen,this laptop and another chunkier laptop which I took to America.One computer I use to play music,I think that's computer 2.

I don't class my Samsung Q40 as a shyte laptop even though it has a slow processor.

It must have traveled 30000 miles with me and it has never let me down.

Personally I wouldnt buy a dell though!

Personally, I'd have to disagree with ye there. I've had many PCs from a wide range of manufacturers over the years, and - Although it can be a pain to reset the CMOS on certain models - Dell machines have always been the ones that I've gotton on with the most! 8)

Personally for me - If I had enough money and was buying myself a PC for high-thrash applications - I'd be going for Dell machines every time!

Toshiba or HP all the way.

I can't really speak for modern Toshiba machines, as all of the "Tosh" systems that I've had have been older 286-486 based laptops. They've been ace little DOS/Windows 3.11 platforms, though! 8)

On the other hand, I've observed quite some problems at times with HP/Compaq systems (FYI: Compaq are owned by HP, and build about 95% of "HP" branded PCs) and I've got the feeling that some Compaq machines have a built-in obsolescence of some description. Although my Athlon-XP powered Presario was still going strong back in December (It's been in a box since then! :razz an older 1GHz Deskpro that I've got in the back room has been very reluctant to boot about 85% of the time... :roll:

Anyhow...I'm currently giving the Wincor box a bit of a test drive on the information super highway this morning, and - As previously promised - Here's a few photos of the old Woolworth's till running Windows XP:

Considering they are the same company with the same or similar components, I really doubt there is a great deal of difference!

Oh but there is. it's like the Citroen C1, the Toyota Aygo and the Peugot 107 (I think). All built in the same factory, but there's about £1100 between them.

That has nothing in common with the arguement of say a Toshiba X200 and a AW whatever. If it has the same parts in it then it doesnt matter who made it it will run the same. You just pay more for a silly name and stupid looking casing.

In your arguement you are talking about objects made in the same factory but using completly different components.

They're not using completely different components though, they all share the same engine block, some electrical bits etc etc
