Your most enjoyable train ride recently?

Not all-time favourite, or marathon trip...
Today I went from Lancaster to West Yorkshire on the Bentham line. It was lovely: glorious weather and views (the green countryside not too burnt-off yet,) a class 150 belting along, not too crowded with all the windows open and nice clean air blowing round and seemingly enjoyed by everyone on board. On top of that it seemed to be mostly jointed track as far as Settle Junction too. A real blast from the past.
(and a good investment of a little extra time to avoid the woes of travelling via Manchester and Leeds.)

For me it would have to be a trip on the 37 hauled set up the Cumbrian Coast from Barrow to Carlisle. It was a very clear day, so could easily see the Isle of Man from the train. The line between Seascale and St Bees is just magnificent, running directly alongside the coast. It was an excellent journey, with excellent scenery, excellent weather and excellent traction, a journey that I'd love to repeat.

Class 37 loco hauled from Norwich to Gt Yarmouth. The accelleration on those services are something I'll never forget. The slam doors and drop down windows just made the experience even better. Definitely my favourite journey, along with the beautiful scenery and the well kept stations.

A rail tour from Hertfordshire to Blaenau Ffestiniog 2 weeks ago. Top and tailed 47s and a long train that made them work hard. Good weather for most of the day and great company made for a memorable day out

Here in commuter land in the South East, the source of pleasure was far more prosaic.

It was finding a refurbished 321 set with aircon on the 16:47 from Liv St to Witham when the temperature begun with a "3". That made my ride home very enjoyable in relative terms but for very different reasons from those above.

Prague to Berlin including lunch in a Czech dining car a few weeks ago. Wonderful scenery following the Elb approaching Dresden, and good food too.

Over here, Sheringham to Holt behind a Warship at the North Norfolk Railway gala, just because it was a bit unusual.

A Gare de Lyon to Melun thrash in a Z5600 + Z20500 combination. One minute late off Gare de Lyon; three minutes early at Melun - the fastest run I've ever had on that high performance sector.

Last Saturday - I went down to Reading to view a boat and ended up buying it (I'm upgrading from a basic holiday craft to something that's more of a second home). A very pleasant return journey along the Cotswold Line (HST both ways), marred only by the late running of the return leg which blew the connection into the 2052 Snow Hill service at Shrub Hill. Can't have everything...

Looking forward to riding from St Albans to Carlisle on a 'Steam Dreams' tour in September. Diesel to Hellifield, then steam (probably a black 5) to Carlisle and back. Then sleep for some of the way back to SAC.
A very long day, - 17+ hours!

Recently will probably be a VTEC HST from Edinburgh to Pitlochry, no better way to sample the lower part of the Highlands Main Line than on a lightly loaded HST compared to a grumbling 170. A nice way to say farewell to VTEC.

Although a fast run from Edinburgh to Glasgow Queen Street behind 86401 on a railtour at the start of June comes close

Today's trip out was hard to beat - a pair of large logo 37s on the short set from Norwich to Great Yarmouth, 37407 & 37409 looked superb and sounded just as good

So did I (on the 1745) and unusually I sat on the south side - no Three Peaks views but just stunning greens under a blue sky, an unexpected treat. Beats the Cumbrian Coast plus the sunset run on the 2018 off Carlisle on Monday.

Thanks for the tip, I must confess I have never been further north than Pontypridd, but I shall certainly try to get up the Valleys before too long...

Today's journey. I popped over to Carlisle to look at the Weeping Window installation on tour at Carlisle Castle.

The Tyne Valley line is always a joy[*] and I think there are few pleasures on the railway better than trundling along a scenic route on a warm, sunny day aboard a 156 with all the windows open.

[*] Unless it's on a Pacer, on a freezing winter's evening... when it's quite miserable.

All of them are highly recommended. And for £13 you can get an "Explore Cardiff and Valleys" ticket. Unlimited travel on all valley lines for a day after 9.30.

The only drawback is that its mostly pacers and 150s on those lines

Interesting and varied scenery etc. Not the S+C , but a nice ride.

Core Trans Pennine can be a bit of a scrum - the approaches on high to Bradford after New Pudsey , with the city lying below is impressive. This line must have some of the best kept stations in the UK ...9/10

I'll have to admit that I really enjoyed traveling along the Esk Valley Line between Middlesbrough & Whitby last month. There's some very scenic parts on that one.

A ride with a few locos on the ELR. Getting reacquainted with 47402(D1501) was a joy to behold but the thrash from double headed 40012 & 37109 was outstanding.
