I've just made a complete idiot of myself. I pulled up at the side of, beeped and waved at someone who i thought was a good friend, only for them to be a complete stranger!!

For some reason i always manage to do stuff like this, either my eyesite isn't as good as it should be, or my friend has a serious double in the same village!!

Please help ease my very red face by sharing some of your embarrassing moments....:D:D

When I was younger (probably about three of four) I was travelling on the London Underground with my parents. My mother was in one carriage with me, and my dad was standing ahead, due to congestion. For some reason, I randomly pushed my way through the crowds and grabbed hold of this man, thinking he was my father. He had the same color trousers on, and I was at a stage in my life when the only things I saw were at low height. I thought he was my Dad, but he certainly he was not!

I remember the whole affair quite clearly!

Was walking through town one lunchtime and noticed a man I recognised outside a snooker club. He was on the telephone, so I stood next to him and waited for them to finish. About a minute later I realised it was Peter Ebdon (the then World Snooker Champion), and not a friend of mine!!

He must've thought I was a right weirdo when I said "alright mate!!" in a very enthusiastic tone of voice!!

Needless to say I skulked away pretty sharpish!!

I had a similar experience to the OP. A car pulled into my work and opened the boot for us to put some sand bags in.

I saw a blonde coloured head moving about in the back seat and thought it was either an Afghan Hound or a Retriever, so when I had put my bag in the boot I held my hand out and said "hello", and went to stroke the dog.

It turned out to be the driver's daughter.

It was at that moment, after years of badgering by my parents and ****-taking from my best friend, that I decided to get my eyes tested.

I now wear glasses.

Too many to mention. Even on this forum.. Not reading posts properly and such.

though i remember once i was in grainger street in Newcastle and swore to high heaven there was a girl that i went to school with - well she looked that way from behind- so i went up behind her at Fenwicks window and pinched her arse only for it not to be her and got slapped. She was wearing the same clothes sort of that i had just seen said school friend in earlier but was not her..

Guess it was worth the slap ;)

If it was worth being slapped, that means you can do it again ^^

Me and my girlfriend were driving through one of the Lake District villages, Grasmere I think it was. We reached a section of road where the two lanes narrowed to leave just a single lane on "our" side of the road, at exactly the same time as a double decker bus heading in the opposite direction did. To our surprise, the bus decided to barge it's way through regardless and we both stopped dead face to face in the middle of this narrow section. The missus and me were adamant that it was our right of way, and after much angered gesticulating and hand waving a concerned local who was passing by ran up to us and said "It's a one way street"...Oops. We'd been driving the wrong way down a one way system!

But isn't it much more embarassing when someone whom you DO know waves at you and you don't wave back because you don't recognise them?
I've done that once or twice and felt very stupid, not to mention feeling that I've 'disowned' a friend!

. . . . . or my friend has a serious double in the same village!!
BTW, I really do have a double in my home town (people on here who know me may be surprised to learn that!). I've often been greeted as my double, have had drinks bought for me, have been challenged for being stupid enough to do the same thing twice in one day and have had lengthly conversations about the double's life and work!

I was a very young Railway Operating Apprentice working at Hammersmith D&P lines when a Piccadilly line train arrived, the doors opened, people got on and off, I gave the guard the "Right" and he closed the doors.....except on one car, we tried every thing to get the doors closed, except one! We tipped out the whole train in order for it to run empty and get it out of the way, after all it was rush-hour, as I went along the train checking it was empty I closed the doors on the "Porter button" on the end of the cars, when I got to the car with the doors that wouldn't close, I pressed the porter button....................and the doors closed, I didn't get lynched by the passengers but it was close, my face was a shade of LT red!

I remember once as a child trying to come up with a word that rhymed with "punt" and starting (aloud) at the eleventh letter of the alphabet.

Surely 'shunt' would have been a better answer. Had a similar experience in an electronics class at school whilst trying to say flux.

I thought it was a nonsense word, and was going to go on to "lunt, munt, nunt, o-unt, etc." No idea why I started there, like sticking a pin into a calendar and hitting Friday the 13th.

Oops!

Though doesn't the world actually begin with the third letter, so you could have been forgiven, even if it sounds the same! ;)

Was spectating at a golf tournament many years ago and amongst many others had obtained Sam Torrance's autograph which pretty much was a squiggly line which had annoyed the heck out of me. Anyhoo, one morning I was standing looking at the leaderboard with my pal when I stated that Sam Torrance was doing pretty well for someone who couldn't write to which a voice behind me said "You think so, do you?" I think you can guess the rest! lol!

In a group of kids playing cards in one of those last-day-of-term situations many years back. We were playing "Chase the Ace" though we knew it by a different name. Teacher wanders over and asks what we are playing, and (other) boy gives him the alliterative name by which we knew it. teacher's name? "Mr Hunt"

OK - real soul-baring now!!

I remember many years ago reading a lesson during a church service. It was about Peter in the courtyard of the High Priest, warming his hands on a brazier [NB - long "a"].

I saw the word coming about a line off, but couldn't decide the proper pronunciation and keep the flow of my reading at the same time, so plumped for a short "a" and hoped I was right.

I never lived-down the comments afterwards. "Good to tell you've got a girlfriend" someone quipped. The Apostle Peter, warming his hands on a brassiere.

Shouting out the ad-lib a few lines too early & LOUD at a screening of Rocky Horror, while in costume.

Closely followed by posting it on a forum x-years later.....

If we are talking years ago....My brothers are in the royal navy. I went down to have a weekend with one who lives in Plymouth...they say never drink with a sailor, i never will again.

I woke up after a heavy saturday night to loud singing. When i opened my eyes i found myself sprawled on the back pew of a church with the sunday service in full swing....

Still no idea how i got there and still no idea how i got into the church. I'm assuming they thought i was homeless and didnt disturb me at all. I quietly snook out while the congregation was full pelt into "guide me o thou great redeemer" Still cant listen to that hymn without dying inside....

What did you say to get them there? "Hi my name is Steve Stifler" ? Seriously though I could think of some much better things to do a certain card game springs to mind.
