IP address is not reliable and not everyone has a GPS enabled device. When Google captures street images they do a sweep of all wi-fi access points and geo-located them. I don't know whether they capture more than just the SSID of the wireless access point or other details like MAC address, but if only the former you can see how they could build up a database of duplicate access point names which might explain the issues experienced.

When tweeting from my desktop in Mexborough, it thinks I'm anywhere but Mexborough. In the past I've had places as far north as Helensburgh and Clydebank, and as far south as Westminster and Ipswich.
Tonight it decided to put me even further afield and said I was tweeting from Armagh!

Google decided that Monday was a day to relocate me from West Bromwich to Wolverhampton, despite the fact that I live near to the north-western rural area of the Macclesfield area.:roll:
