Hello all i was just thinking t'other day about all those years ago and my first stuttering day going back n forth for no other reason than writing down the moves, as allways with the first time you do it I had no real idea what I was doing, certainly no access to diagrams or TOPS just go to the end of the platform and hit and hope sorta thing. Anyway this was mine it was a Saturday in 1987

47432 Newport to Cardiff
47616 back to Newport
47628 back to Cardiff
31160/240 back to Newport
50021 back to Cardiff
33040 back to Newport

All for the cost of about £2, as I said not the most impressive start but a million times better than you could do now.

Anyway over to you guys, I'm sure you can do better Lol

Not quite what you're asking, but I used to enjoy turning up at Bank Quay in the morning, not knowing if "The Bangor" was going to be a 40. The moment it popped it's nose round the corner under the road bridge was either total excitement or a dull feeling of "oh no, a bloody duff again".

I will dig out my notes but my first one was in 1975 and started with an electric on The Royal Highlander 00.08 ex Preston and I took it all the way to Inverness with a loco change at Mossend Yard. Great days

I did a 14 day All Line in 1984 to celebrate the end of my exams.

Especially if it was an EH duff aka 47/4. Non-Boiler Duff as in 47/3 were OK in my book.

Waiting another 2 1/2 years until my Senior Railcard then I'll do an all line rover to celebrate.

My first ALR was in summer 1978 and was mostly about line-coverage (as were quite a few after) so I didn't pile up a load of moves. In fact in one week I had only 12 locos and 4 HST PCs but plenty of EMUs on various local lines. Looking back it's easy to think about what I missed, especially on summer Saturdays, but there was very little gen available to enthusiasts who had no insider knowledge.

There was a sub-set of bashers who only bought tickets from the guard with the their train and destination depending on what turned up. Among them were the "mileage men" who had a notional minimum mileage for each move, some wanted at least 10 miles but one or two wanted at least 50 miles. I suspect most of the latter were PRIV holders.

I was a Cardiff-Newport basher like you but a bit before that - late 70s early 80s, summer saturdays were best with NB Duffs, 37's, 25's the odd 40 now and again - great times!
