Your first car

Following on from the top gear thread (sort of) I noticed the amount of car lovers on the forum.

So here's my question. What was the first car you ever had?

Mine was a G reg Astra GTE in a cream colour....named him Alfie.

I had an RS Turbo for about four months....had my alloys swiped three times!!

There's still an old escort van in our village an f reg with a set of pepper pots on....he had the old dog legs before them.

My recommendation would be only buy a car if you absolutely positively need one. Otherwise do without and save you wallet

While i agree with XC i'd go for something cheap and cheerful like a clio or ford Ka. Maybe a toyota Yaris??

I do, sadly. I'm not looking forward to the cost, but a car is essential as for uni I've got to be able to get around in the middle of the night to various places where public transport doesn't go.

I bet a taxi every trip would still be cheaper than a car.
I don't know any details of yourself but if you are around 20ish with no no claims and only just past your test you will be looking at 2 grand just for insurance alone

Not the taxis round here! I'll probably be able to get slightly cheaper insurance than is usual for my age by the end of my first year, but I'll budget for all of that later! I'm concentrating on the application at the moment.

In a lot of cases, insurance is higher on older cars for younger drivers.

My insurance for a Citroen C1 fully comp fell from 326 to 237
Other Half for a Citroen C2 fully comp fell from 355 to 303
Lads insurance for a Corsa 3rd party no change from 1935
Work that one out, i'm sure I cant

Just be glad you didn't have that old 59hp Kent push-rod engine in it. I had that engine in one of the more modern Escorts and is was no fun let me tell you. I now have a 1 year old Focus RS and it's no slouch let me tell you.

I dont drive (well not on the open road), so i have never had a car but i have since 1987 owned/part owned a former London Transport Routemaster. Some would say why own something that you cant drive (legally), there is more to owning a classic design icon then just driving it.

I had a 1992 J reg Astra 1.4 GSi Replica in Spectral Blue. Loved it!

Had it on 17 inch multispokes, Konis and a K&N induction kit which made it pink like hell ha!

I have owned 4 minis and it the most fun you can have whilst driving
I currently drive a Citroen C1 which is about the closest thing I have driven to a mini

Look into fully comp, in a lot of cases for younger drivers, it's cheaper than 3rd party or TPFT. It can be up to £200 cheaper for me to go fully comp over TPFT, if not more.
Also, cars like Corsas, and Civics especially, are considered to be boy racer cars, and the insurance is much higher on them.

Both of my lads insurance is quite reasonable one is 22 and has a focus and the other is 25 and a Subaru. I think it`s were you live that puts the price up.

My daughter is 17 and learning to drive, she has a fiesta but wants an old mini to rebuild and rally. She can change a land rover engine (she could at 15) but wants a mini

It's a 900E. That particular camper version is a Caravelle, but the more common version was the Amigo.
