Your favourite comedian

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Eddie Izzard. I know he's not to everyone's tastes but I find him hilarious - saw him in Nottingham a few years ago, and he had me in stitches.

Not usually a 'stand up' but I saw John Cleese on his recent tour, and he was also great. It was a sort of potted biography, with lots of amusing anecdotes thrown in - great evening, and money well spent.

I can't stand various people - Peter Kay (as much as a love Phoenix Nights), paying over £100 for a ticket, to hear the same jokes he's been telling for years is not cool. I'm not keen on Leigh Francis (aka Keith Lemon), but he can be funny at times. Finally, Frankie Boyle is a comedian who lost it - used to be quite amusing, but lost it trying to shock all the time, instead of a balance between shocking and funny.

On the other hand, I have always loved Rowan Atkinson, especially Mr Bean, I own, somewhere, all the the episodes and films on VHS. I can't wait for Johnny English 2 to come out this week, even if it is rated at PG and I'm 21!

2 names that are conspicuous by their absences are Dave Allen and Jasper Carrott. I saw Carrott (real name Bob Davis) in 1975 before he became a name, and he was hilarious. He was doing Billy Connolly-style material before either of them were stars.
I also saw Dave Allen live in 1985. He obviously wrote a lot of his material, but his live political & religeous ad-libs were side-splitting.
I also like Groucho Marx, Steve Wright (no, not the D.J!) and Barry Cryer, though he was more a writer, but did a little performing.
Of the current crop, I like Milton Jones and Adam Hills.
Michael McIntyre is all act & no comedy, I don't like Andy Parsons' style (though his material is good), Johnny Vegas is as funny as a fire at an orphanage, and Sean Lock bores the aerosol off me.

I can't make my mind up about Bill Hicks - possibly too political, even for me!

Johnny Vegas is as funny as a fire at an orphanage

I saw Johnny Vegas at Nottingham Comedy Club last year, and he was extremely funny, worth seeing in my opinion.

One I just don't get is Phil Jupitus...

The late Dave Allen was a comic genius!!! Saw john Bishop live at Sheffield arena in May and he was hilarious. Already got tickets for Michael Mac in october of next year.

Thats him!! He's kind of an inspiration to us amputees. he gives us a sense of humour about ourselves lol.

I wonder if anyone remembers Joseph Spah's famous act involving a bendy rubber lamp post and himself as a drunk? He used that act for over 40 years and it never lost popularity.

This is even before my time, really - he died in about 1975 or 1976 when I was 8 or 9!

There are partial clips of it on YT, though I've never seen a clip of the full act.

Rich Hall is brilliant, I once saw him live at the Notts Playhouse when I was doing a bit of work there.

Tell you what though, it had us panicking when he didn't turn up until literaly 10 mins before he was due to go on stage. The warm up was already half way through his act when Rich Hall arrived!
