If you could preserve ANY closed railway in the United Kingdom in its entirety (that is any era within operation), which railway would that be? And more importantly, why would you choose that particular line?

Obviously your choice doesn't have to be limited down to purely tourist attraction incentives only i.e. "steam heritage railway", it can also be for providing commerce and viable community links to isolated parts of the country as well.

Now, I personally would choose the Merthyr, Tredegar and Abergavenny Railway, purely for the views, I'm a sucker for sights. If you don't already know the route encompasses some rather enchanting scenic parts of South Wales (see link here to Capt' Gorgeous' photostream), especially over the Clydach Gorge (a breathtaking walk – no pun intended), but also provides a much-needed connection with Brynmawr.

EDIT: apologies the flickr photo link went awol ^^
