Yorkshire Wolds Railway

I visitied this railway on Saturday, and had a very enjoyable experience, the staff, who are all volunteers made us welcome.

They offer a driver experience, and I have been looking for an affordable option for some time. I have an adult nephew with learning disabilities, he is 27, but a mental age, maybe 10, and I wanted to include him, as he has an interest in railways, probably 'caught' from me. You can have a guest in the cab, I would 'drive', but he would be in the cab with us. So after an email exchange to ensure they had no problem with my nephew joining me (I am all for inclusivity but wouldn't drop it on someone) the trip was paid for and arranged.

A small diesel hydraulic shunter, an instructoir and a 'safety' man in the cab with me and nephew. After a short safety briefing 25 mins in the cab.

Several runs up and down the track which follows a short strech of the old Malton Driffield railway

A scenic location in the middle of the Yorkshire Wolds near Fimber. Nephew was able to sound the horn as required. Sun shone in spite of sea fret where we live about 20 miles away

Its a small undertaking, all volunteers, and is only open one or two days a week in the summer. They have done an excellent job with the resources they have.

So a big thankyou to one of the smaller(est?) undertakings.

It wouldn't suit someone looking for the big rail experience, but it suited our needs, and exceeded expectations.

Interesting! Presume the location of the railway is to the East of York in the general direction of Bridlington. Can you get there straightforwardly (without a car) on the days that it's operational?

Be right in saying that it's not currently longest of heritage railway lines, but presume they've plans to extend it (subject to the success of fundraising efforts)?

Public transport is a non starter. I think there is a bus on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but of course the railway doesnt run those days. Its about 10 miles from Driffield, which is the nearest place with regular public transport, Malton is about 11 miles the other way, but again no link. This part of the Wolds is empty, just a few small villages. There is also the Computer Sheds Museum in Fimber village, about 1.5 miles away, but again no public transport. I'm afraid its car or some sort of self propelled transport.
