Hi, I'm working a tour to Weardale soon - but I'm bailing out with a mate at York.

I've been to York a few times and have seen the place, so we thought we could go to Leeds - except it's £10.50! Which is pretty steep for only a few hours in the city.

Can anyone recommend a good place to go that's cheaper? Or any good rovers or ticket deals (like getting a cheaper ticket to another destination that's via Leeds)?

South Milford is valid via Leeds, but if you're going off-peak it's probably not worth the hassle of the potential argument you may have if you encounter a guard that is both 'desperate' and unknowledgeable. It's worth it at peak time or if doing a single.

You could visit Harrogate & Knaresborough instead?

Ok, cheers for that. I will probably do one or the other. I will fight (metaphorically, I have the greatest respect for crews) Northern to the hilt if they PF me or claim it is not valid.

Northern are a sensible company and don't have PF's so no worries there

From what I heard the scheme was a complete and utter farce. I think it may have been under Northern Spirit, or possibly Arriva Trains Northern. But it was probably the DafT's idea (or DoT, or whatever it was called then!).

It was under Arriva Trains Northern. It was a shambles. Of the 16 stations on the "triangle", at the time only 4 had all day open full time ticket offices, and 1 had a morning peak hours only one. This meant the scheme relied a lot on the Permit to Travel machines. The problem was, they never worked as the kept being vandalised, stolen or simply knackered. When they did work everyone just put in 5p or suchlike, thus causing great inconvenience to the Guards on trains who had to process all these vouchers from all the unstaffed stations. Combine this with the fact that no one seemed to ever see a proper Inspector it can only be assumed that no one ever got a Penalty Fare. I do know that revenue actually dropped as the Guards were taking longer to issue tickets and therefore not doing so many, and lots weren't bothering anyway due to the increased hassle. So it got scrapped after not too long.

In recent years Northern has made further attempts to try and collect some of the huge amounts of lost revenue on the triangle by using Assistant Fare Collectors on trains. This didn't last long either as at peak times the trains were too full for them to move. So now at peak times you find they are stationed at key points like Keighley to check tickets as people join and leave trains. You still see them on trains at off peak times however, with them proving a valuable assistant to the Guard who doesn't have a cat in hells chance of collecting all the fares on offer.

Get the bus to Leeds. Yorkshire Coastliner runs 4 times ph. You could buy a WY DayRover at York and pay on the bus as far as Bramham Crossroads (actually the junction of the A1 and A64 and no longer a crossroads) where the WY validity begins. From Leeds then use the Rover to do a few trains in West Yorks.

There was a picture up on the net of the old Permit to Travel machine at Steeton and Silsden, however whoever had set it up had done it incorrectly, so all the tickets came out Steeton and Silsdon. Basic error.

The company that runs the slow Coastliner service does not reveal the fares on their website, however I have a feeling that they are rather expensive. I believe they have to provide a fare table on request. The fact they're hiding it is a bit suspicious. I'd call them to enquire before committing to it.

If there are several of you, consider a Poppleton - Leeds Duo ticket which costs £15.70 for 2 adults who must travel together at all times. Valid any time at weekends, M-F outward by any train timed to depart from 0930, return by any train. It can be bought online at eastcoast.co.uk

Northern Duo is available for 2 adults travelling together at 'off peak' times on a number of routes. Available for travel on Northern, Arriva Trains Wales, Cross Country Trains, East Coast, First TransPennine Express, First Hull Trains, Merseyrail and Virgin Trains services. Break of journey is only permitted for connectional purposes on the outward journey and at anytime on the return journey.

You could buy a WY DayRover

There is a Family version of the Metro Day Rover at £8.80 for

• up to 2 adults + up to 3 "concessions" (children, WY pass holders or dogs), or
• 1 adult + up to 4 "concessions".

Valid any time at weekends, M-F outward by any bus or train timed to depart from 0930.

When I lived in Heworth in York the bus was much cheaper than the train to Leeds (even with a YP Railcard), and because it called in Heworth not actually any slower for me at least. Admittedly this was 15 years ago, but It'd have to be one hell of an expensive bus to cost more than the [outrageous] £10.55 York > Leeds day return train fare to go from York station to Bramham and back.

The webpage definitely has changed. They used to show fares online for major destinations. The bus fare was £5.30 rtn for Leeds-Tadcaster (x'mas 2008 price), back then a Leeds-York rtn would have been around £7.50-£8. I'd expect at least one fare hike per year, which is not impossible to see a double-figure fare for that journey now. Their buses are pretty comfortable with leather seats though!

First (Leeds/York) was running the X64 between Leeds and York at £5 return for around a year but seem to have stopped recently...

Don't know when you're visiting exactly. While you say 'soon', it is possible you hit the term-start in universities in Leeds, when the traffic into town from all trunk routes would be an absolute nightmare... So I'd second yorkie's idea about Harrogate and Knaresborough. A YRK-HGT return shallcover the BoJ at KNA. Trains run half-hourly (apart from Sundays) between HGT-KNA, and hourly between KNA-YRK, and you get to see the single-track bit on the York-Harrogate line!
