Marston Moor signal box given listed status

A 165-year-old railway signal box in North Yorkshire has been given Grade II listed status.

The Marston Moor box near Harrogate is one of 14 to be listed in the latest round of a joint English Heritage and Network Rail project, after 26 were given listed status in July.

Network Rail said the Marston Moor box stood out because of its small size, original timber windows and internal features.

I'm very much in favour of listing signal boxes, especially if they are good examples of the architecture and design of the railway company which built them.

But, to be practical, that then begs the question of who maintains them? English Heritage and partner organisations are stretched enough already in maintaining churches, stately homes, etc. Do they also have a budget for signal boxes?

If another use can be found for them, eg. the café at Totnes or the lounge of the retreat house at Stixwould, then all well and good. But otherwise they can quickly become an eyesore. I'm thinking now of the once magnificent L.& N.W. Rhyl West box, boarded-up for many years and simply left to decay.

Quite a few boxes have been sold for residential use, Clayton West Junction box on the Penistone line being an example.
