Yorkshire people

We are often portrayed as working class, straight talking, logical thinking, penny pinching, overly proud of our region folk who lack ambition, and fail to recognise the world outside Yorkshire.

If you are from Yorkshire, do you agree with our portrayal, do you find it offensive or do you laugh it off as banter?

If you're from outside Yorkshire, how do you perceive us? Do you find our straight talking refreshing or just rude?

It would be interesting to know your viewpoints?

I lived in Bradford for 4 years whilst at Uni and didn't find the people in general any different to people anywhere else. They weren't any more or less rude or straight talking, and as for penny pinching, one of my best mates is from Bridlington and you couldn't meet a more generous chap.

It is a lovely part of the world and as with most places, the people are generally very nice.

Quite, and justifiably rather than 'overly' proud of their beautiful and historic region of the country...I love visiting Yorkshire.

Sounds like a generalisation too far. And that's from me the son of generations of Yorkshire folk (and the odd dash of Irish and Nottinghamshire ). My mother, for one, failed to meet any of your findings about Yorkshire folk.
I think the folk on these islands have pretty much the same attitudes and behaviours regardless of where they were born or bred.

In my experience, the most bitter animosity against Yorkshire folk comes from . . . .




. . . . other Yorkshire folk.

Just look at the contempt for Leeds from Sheffield, or Huddersfield, or the contempt of Sheffield from Doncaster and York.

The stereotypes are exaggerated, but I feel it has some truth, I like the atmosphere even in the big cities. No elbows in your ribs, because you are not walking fast enough, unlike London.

As an exiled Lancastrian at Uni in the Midlands, it's actually true that stereotypical Lancashire and Yorkshire attitudes are quite similar, especially compared to people hailing from the South. Of course Lancashire is no where near as 'notorious' as Yorkshire for Southerners, although if it still included Liverpool and (most of) Manchester I have a feel it would be....

You clearly have never had the benefit of being in the company of Eric Pickles or Geoff Boycott for any period of time then. I have, and found both to be ignorant and bombastic individuals that bring shame to the overwhelming majority of reasonable Folk hailing from t'other side o' Pennines.

As a Yorkshireman born and bread I'm proud to say I think we're a broadly decent bunch of people. Get on the right bus and all the passengers chat politely and have no issues in sharing and giving up seats for the elderly, dead friendly!

I've just moved down the MML a bit for Uni and it seems different to me, prices are higher for sure and no-on understands my accent!

Loughborough is an odd town. Bigger than Castleford, smaller than Wakefield, with a university, but from what I saw, not much of a student scene.

To me though it was just the nearest Tesco, and where I caught the train to work every morning.

It's a very strange place, lots of students (1/4th the population) and a lot of them travelling but theres no real bus station either! It is a truly odd place, makes me all the more glad to get back to God's own country!

Greave Clough Farm was once said to be the most westerly settlement in Yorkshire. Does anyone know of its exact location and how far it is from the Lancashire coastline.
