is there are footbridge over the river alongside the Scarborough line?

If so, how do you reach it from the railway station?

I need to get to the football ground and wanted to know if there was a shortcut

There is but not much quicker than via Bootham.

Left outside the station...follow road round towards Minster, through bar walls and drop down to station side of river bank. Head to the Scarboro bridge, and go up the steps...cross!!

Bit of a faff though.

The even less interesting alternayive route is to turn left out of station as before, follow signs to rly museum along Leeman road. Just before the foot tunnel under the Noerth station throat, take footpath up to Scar bridge. Never ever used it myself.

There is af course an exit off the main station footbridge to the Leeman rd entrance to the museum but that takes you to the wrong end of the foot tunnel...a most unpleaseant walk.

quickest way - out of station rear entrance, follow the path as if you were going to walk to NRMwalk back through the tunnel and then on exiting the tunnel immediate right along the alley that runs along side the sorting office, staight onto the Scarborough line bridge!

Are they? I've used them literally hundreds of times and not only have never been mugged, but have never even seen anyone hanging around there.

Isn't the footbridge over the river closed for repairs at the moment?

I use the footbridge almost daily. It isn't afaik known as a muggers paradise and is a quicker route to the football ground if you leave the rear exit of the station.

We used to be all over that area like a rash in the glory years. In the days before the rear entrance at the station you could usually cut through the grounds of the Station Hotel to get to the snicket by the Royal Mail depot. There was usually stock (and sometimes an 08 or 31) stabled in platform 4 along the full length of the snicket. Otherwise down to Howarth's timber yard on Leeman Road where you could climb up the piles of wood to get a really good view of what was on the stabling point and almost touch the locos on the dead line. Sometimes along the river to Clifton depot if you were the lowest of the low, that is someone who recorded coach numbers. You could sneak into the engineers' yard at the point where Leeman Road bends round to go under the railway, or head down the Cinder Path to the footbridge at York Yard South affording a panoramic view of the works and the yards filled with MGR rakes from the North East coalfields waiting TI based class 56s from Knottingley to trip them into Drax, Eggborough or Ferrybridge. Then head on to the extensive disused cattle docks behind St Paul's church next to Holgate Junction for a bit more spotting and to meet up with the other lads in the area. Then to the Dicky Bridge to see what was in the reception sidings and maybe cab a loco or two.

Wonderful times. I wonder how many weekends were spent idly wandering around this square mile or so that was almost 100% covered in railway stuff?

Mmm...Still a nicer walk via Lendal Bridge. If you want some nature you can slip through Museum gardens and arrive in Marygate...and pop up to Bootham via the Minster Inn. There is a snickety way through the car park, but you gain no time and might meet clowns. Depends on the time of day.
