Right, granted I'm fairly young (16), I was planning ahead and thinking about nice places to go for a weekend break (with a missus perhaps!). I hear York can be quite nice, a quintessential English city steeped in history...also gives a chance to use the Grand Central service out of Kings X! The onboard monopoly board has to be given a shot. But yeah, would anyone recommend York? The city of York for a little break with a girlfriend?

No avoid it like the plague as My mate works in York IECC box & will probably wrong route you!
Seriously though it is nice, although I have only been to the NRM there & some model exhibition a fair few years ago.

I'd recommend it too, plenty of culture there - museums, interesting buildings, a ghost walk, river trips, and you can throw in the NRM too for a bit of railways. The way you word it, you seem to need to find a 'missus' first though!!
York is probably my favourite English, perhaps even British, city. I can only reiterate what everyone else has said; there is a lot to do. Even if your girlfriend would rather not visit the NRM (which even non-enthusiast enjoy in my experience), you could spend the day shopping, doing all the touristy stuff or just relaxing.
It is a summer city, though, so going in the rainy season is not recommended!
There're probably some nice places in the area as well if it's not your cup of tea.

Yeah, get yourself to York.
Recommended pubs include: The Little John & York Arms ( do a wicked toad in the hole)
Make sure to have a walk through the Museum Gardens, the regulars will have you laughing your socks off at their various Special Brew induced antics.
Don't forget to grab a burger at Mcdonalds, but avoid the toilets as that UV lighting plays havoc with your eyes !
Just round the corner from the Minster is Keystones bar, where art-students decorate the pavement with all kinds of alco-pops at all times of the day.
To finish your day off why not pop in to Yorks Yummy Chicken take-away where only one word of the shops name is true !

The Maltings is somewhat over-rated in my view. Much more pleasant places with decent beer, even if it does mean walking for an extra minute or so. Anywa, QPRfella is only 16 and is bringing a girlfriend with him, so a) he is too young, and b) he will have other things he wants to do!

York's a good place to visit, always busy with tourists.
Going by train is sensible as once you're in York, a car is useless. You can get everywhere on foot, the centre is very compact.
Just don't go when the races are on as accomodation will be more expensive and you get drunk people in suits visiting the city acting like prats. Any other time is fine!
