Looking for the cheapest tickets for the above journey. Looks as if I'll go on Thursday (6th), not bothered about times. With a YP railcard.

Found a single advance for around £8 valid via Newcastle and Carlisle, but nothing for the return. Would it be easier to go via Manchester and the WCML instead?

I may be also able to do it on the Thursday the week after, but will have to check. Thanks for the info.

You coudbuy advance tickets to Newcastle (stil available from £4-60 with railcard) and a Hadrians Wall day Ranger for £11-90 (with r/c) which allows travel between Sunderland/Newcastle - Carlisle -Ravenglass.

I'd endorse the above - note that you can still travel first class between York and Newcastle on a few East Coast trains at just £9.40 each way too.

or if you would prefer a Grand Central service up to Sunderland, that comes in at around £10 - splitting at Hartlepool with railcard.

Thanks for the ideas, totally forgot about the Hadrian's Wall line rover. GC would be good but would add a bit onto the travelling time, which is already looking to be over 4 hours.
