york to oban

in view of the fact that mullrail have lived to fight another day i`m looking to embark on a journey from york to visit them,hopefully also stopping off to visit the bo`ness & kinniel railway en route. i don`t have any specific dates although mullrail cease operayions (permanently?) in early september. does anyone know if it`s worth re-booking in edinburgh/glasgow or just buying a return from york to oban? also can i through-book via calmac to craignure or not? rsvp

There are fares through to Craignure available from all Scottish stations but not from English ones. They are available from all TOC websites (or at least, all the ones that sell tickets!) and cost about £10 more than a fare to Oban.

By re-book, I presume you mean split tickets? You could certainly save money by splitting, particularly if you can buy advance fares.

A York-Oban off-peak return is £117. By booking advance fares you could do York-Glasgow for £30-£40 return depending on when you chose to travel, but obviously you'd be tied to those trains. A Glasgow-Craignure anytime return is £44.10 (the same cost as an off-peak return!!!). Alternatively, Glasgow-Oban can be done on advance singles for £17.80, again tying you to specific trains.

If I were you, I'd take the advances and buy the ferry ticket at Oban - the savings are worth it

would the travelpass not be suitable

then all the op would need a ticket to berwick/carlisle. as the freedom of scotland travelpass includes the calmac sailing from oban..
