York to NYMR through fare

Hi,

Am making a journey to the NYMR later this year. I want to travel by train from York to Malton, bus then to Pickering and then NYMR. Is this

For that journey you will need 3 separate tickets. The Pickering bus link ticket is designed for changing onto the bus at York, not Malton, and is not valid by train to Malton. The through fare you mention above is designed for travelling via Middlesbrough, so isn't valid via Malton on either train or bus.

If you can say where you're starting from, and returning to, and is it a day return, I could have ago at suggesting a suitable combination of tickets (but it's so complicated, I probably won't find the optimum, but even when the rail industry, bus industry and preserved railways try their best to thwart us and make a day out prohibitively expensive to put people off, between us, this forum's members can usually thwart them and find an affordable option)

I think PlusBus was invented to pretend we have integrated transport, basically a box-ticking exercise.

In reality, many places are not in PlusBus areas, and many booking clerks won't issue a PlusBus for the relevant area if the destination on the passenger's ticket is different to the name of the PlusBus area (e.g. they may refuse to issue Harrogate +Bus for Starbeck, even though Starbeck is in the relevant area). Also PlusBus is rarely cheaper for non-Railcard holders making a single journey (and in some cases is not even cheaper if you are doing a return, and may even be more expensive if you do have a Railcard - the pricing is a bit random, so the value varies!)

Sorry I should have made it clearer. Staying in York and want to have a trip on the NYMR. Ideally train as much as possible and bus from Malton to Pickering but if that's too expensive then any other options. The route via Middlesbrough just seems a ridiculously long way round - or could one make a loop journey?

The cheapest way is simply to get a return York to Grosmont (£13.30 CDR) and then pick up the NYMR from there, or to take the bus all the way there and back (York to Pickering £12 return).

If you wish to combine the train/bus at Malton, it gets very expensive. TPE price this route high in order to suppress demand, so it's best that their wishes are granted and you avoid using it wherever possible. They certainly don't seem to want our custom!
