Just seen that York station gets took over by Network Rail today. What changes are we likely to see?

Grade I listed with a council keen on protecting heritage. It may be harder than elsewhere.

The council's draft local plan includes a specific policy to upgrade the capacity and facilities of York station. It accepts that changes need to be made to meet the demands of the modern customer and it should not prevent proposals that are sympathetic to the heritage of the station from being put forward.

Lets hope any changes don't repeat the copper pods in a glazed portico idea that doesn't seem to have worked in Newcastle.

The problem with that is that Newcastle has a much bigger concourse/circulation area than York.

There the area is quite cramped and limited to the space directly in front of WH Smith.

I've been in a car that parked at York, albeit for all of five minutes while we said our goodbyes.

I hadn't heard that NR was taking over more stations, Why York though? I didn't think it was that busy a station.

The heads up was quite a few years ago, in the Chris Green stations report for DfT, (2009) where the major London terminals and some national interchanges 'National Hub A stations' were all proposed to be part of Network Rail's managed stations estate.

Other examples proposed to move to Network Rail were/are Bristol TM, Reading, and Newcastle Central.

As a major interchange station(in my view) the possibility of raking in the coin is going to be too great from rents and a cut of retail unit profits.

These changes of ownership are annoying, makes my database all messy, I'll have to add a new table listing every station and owner with dates.

Got to agree that for shopping etc the park and ride is excellent

They could move the "Left Luggage" into the station from it's current site in a Portakabin which involves crossing the road with your luggage ?

Agreed, for people outside York who are not travelling in the evening.

But bus isn't viable for anyone within York unless they happen to live on the 1 or 4 bus routes; all the rest have abysmal frequencies.

Also anyone not boarding at a P&R site pays the non-car owners supplement in the form of sky high bus fares.

Park & Ride isn't viable for late arrivals by train though as the last buses are very early.

Absolutely -- no real public transport system in a city that desperately needs it. Where I live you actually have to walk as far to get to a bus-stop as the bus then takes to get you to the station. And because of the city-centre traffic situation and lack of bus priority at lights etc the buses are very slow and unpredictable when you do get on them. Then add it spending more time at stops for ticket-issue than you actually spend travelling ..... Who would use the buses to get to and from the station if they had access to a car (and could afford the parking charges)?

I always thought York had a decent bus service in the city. The 1 or the 10 seem regular which are the ones i use most now.

When i lived up up the top end of Boroughbridge Road and in Acomb the bus services was OK. Although when i lived out at Askham Bryan there were no bus services so perhaps inside the ring road you get a good service.

I didn't know that - i have only ever used the big P&R sites

Looking at it the DO seem to stop very early. I am sure when i lived in York they ran much later!

I used the Tesco P&R at Askham Bar on a daily basis to and from the station and found it to be a good, cheap, efficient and reliable service. Perhaps it has gone down hill.

See above - although i was to be able to make an early train to Darlo via the &R, although I tended to wait for the GNER train to Aberdeen

Not necessarily. It did't change at Reading for instance. I believe the relevant risk assessments are independent of who manages a station.

Fine, manages then. Either way it's annoying.

Does anyone know why the management changed on a TUESDAY? I'd have understood Sunday as the start of 2015-P04, or today (Wed 1st) as the start of July, but Tuesday?
