I realise this is very short notice, but just found out I am going to be in York this morning, and have a couple of hours spare to watch the trains on the station.
Where is the best place to watch?
I will be arriving by train from Leeds late morning.

Also anything interesting to watch out for between say 11am and 1pm?

Also as I do not have access to a timetable at the moment, what time is the Flying Scotsman (the titled train not the loco) scheduled to come through?

Many thanks

There is a viewing balcony at the National Railway Museum that also has a monitor for live train times. Depending what time you get there you could try that.

That's worth a shot if you have time - watching a headcode on the live mirrors of the signaller's displays then being able to see the real thing go past is kind of cool :)

Failing that, the south end of platform 9 is probably the best bet - you'll see everything bar the Harrogate line units (Pacers / 150s usually) - and you'll be able to see freight going round the west curve.

You'd probably have caught the Scarborough Spa going through behind a Black 5 or Scots Guardsman - but it looks like it's been cancelled this week?

can't help you on the Flying Scotsman I'm afraid - I know you've missed the southbound run (gets to London at 09xx), and I can't see the northbound run on NRE - not sure if there actually is one!

Yup, south end of Platform 9 if you want to get a view of the station avoiding lines, as well as anything arriving/departing from/to the south. The Scarborough Spa Express finished last week, apparently.

There is now only an Up Flying Scotsman, and it runs through York around 7:50 or so, so you'll be too late for that.

Cheers,

What a great forum this is.

I will spend some time at the south end of platform 9, then take a wander to the Railway Museum.

Many thanks.

Defo, end of platform 9, though you may need binoculars or someone with a pair to get some of the 66's coming off the avoiding line ;)

Best place to be at York is in the York Tap bar on platform 3 !!

Think I can speak for most people here and say the help will be gladly given. Apart from this ^ guy who seems to be encouraging you to be drunk and disorderly!!! Only joking.:lol:
