Just did the above trip, the cheapest ticket I could find was £7.25 with a YP railcard. The ticket has Route Not Darlington and Validity See Restrictions.

I used GC both ways and changed at Eaglescliffe. However a conductor on the Northern Saltburn - Darlington train said I should change at Middlesbrough for a TPE train.

1) Would this ticket have been valid on TPE on the return leg?

2) If I wanted to travel on TPE on the outward journey, would I have to pay an excess or get a different ticket?

3) If I wanted to travel via Darlington, on either leg, what would be the excess/course of action?

I bought the tickets off East Coast's website, and there were several different fares for day returns with YP railcard, and was saying "Only Valid on Certain TOCs" without actually naming the TOCs.

Thanks for any info.

1. Why wouldn't it be valid? Unless stated clearly in the Route section on the ticket (eg. Route: GC Only), the ticket is valid on all TOCs over valid routes. So yes, it would have been valid.

2. Same as above

3. As far as I'm aware, you would have been excessed to an any permitted ticket.

Did they say you should not use GC? If so, what reason did he/she give? I'd ask for reasons, and their name and who has told them this, and details on how I can make a complaint. If they were just being helpful and saying that you should change at Middlesbrough out of general advice then that's different of course.

It is valid on any operator.
2) If I wanted to travel on TPE on the outward journey, would I have to pay an excess or get a different ticket?
No, why would you?

National Conditions of Carriage said:
B. VALIDITY OF TICKETS
10. Tickets valid only in trains of particular Train Companies
The validity of a ticket may:
a) be restricted to; or
b) prohibit
travel in the trains of a particular Train Company or Train Companies. Any such restriction
or prohibition will be shown on the ticket. If you travel in a train with a ticket that is not
valid, the relevant parts of Condition 2 or 4 will apply. If you are unable to use a ticket or
any part of it, you may be able to claim a refund under Condition 26 or Condition 36.
Is there anything that says it is restricted to any company printed on the ticket? No, it's just routed Not Darlington. Nothing wrong with using an East Coast service for example, between Northallerton and York. It's not in any way limited to certain TOCs.
3) If I wanted to travel via Darlington, on either leg, what would be the excess/course of action?
Change of route excess. Half the difference for one portion, so £3.70.

There are Advance singles available on Cross Country, there are no return tickets restricted by TOC.

Think the conductor was trying to be helpful, but when I told him I'd be changing at Eaglesciffe he said it would be fine.

Think I found the problem - the EC website wasn't showing some of the slower TPE services but looked like it was saying the ticket wasn't valid on these services. My mistake.

Also - when I have bought a York - Hartlepool ticket at York station, I have been asked if I was using GC - so is there a difference in price between using GC only, or using TPE and Northern via Thornaby? If there is no difference, why did the ticket seller ask?

Ah that's ok then, I thought you may have been told you "should" get TPE as opposed to GC.

There are GC only fares for that route, however if you are returning same day it is cheaper to get the inter-available fare, which enables you to change at Thornaby/Middlesbrough as well as the direct trains. If you are returning another day or doing the journey on the early morning service from Hartlepool then it is significantly cheaper to get the GC only fare. The GC only fare is available as an Anytime only.

There are GC only anytime singles and returns:

Off-peak day single, valid anytime (Not Darlington) = £10.90
Anytime single (GC only) = £8

Off-peak day return, valid after 0915 (Not Darlington) = £11
Anytime return (GC only) = £12

Thus, since there are no northbound GC services from York before 0915, the GC only is basically redundant for return journeys (unless you're coming back a different day). However, as shown, you can save a bit on a single journey.

Right thanks for that. Just wondering now if it would have been any cheaper splitting at Eaglescliffe for York - Eaglescliffe GC only return and then a Eaglescliffe - Saltburn ticket? Probably not as £7.25 is very cheap anyway.

Nope, as York-Eaglescliffe is £5.95 GC only Anytime (with Railcard) or £6.95 for the inter-available Off Peak Day.

So it is. Advantix has made my life so much easier now! Be even better if it had timetables loaded onto it...
