Morning,

I am after some help again.

I need to go to and from York on Monday. I can get from Milton Keynes (Via London) to York for £31 (Virgin/GC) but i cant get back for a reasonable price.

Can anyone offer any help. I cant leave York until at least 1500 due to meetings ( plus saftey factor) but have no preferance regarding routes or TOCs.

Help and thanks!

When do you need to be arriving at York? There are some exotic splits that could bring you down to a walk-up fare of £53.70 return depending on your plans.

I think Island meant that you might be able to make your overall journey cheaper depending on when you can arrive into York.

One that comes to mind is:

Milton Keynes Central - Tamworth advance single £5-7.50
Tamworth - Derby anytime day return route not Birmingham £12.60
Derby-York off peak return £37; the earliest you can get into York is 10:45
Tamworth - MKC advance single £5

Total cost of ~£59 for the whole trip; island's post suggests that he might know a few splits that will do you even cheaper, depending on when you need to be there

I know; the reason I asked was in case it might be cheaper changing your plan from MKC-YRK slightly to get a better overall deal.

To get back, YRK-KGX advance at 1601 is £36.50, another £13 gets you EUS-MKC (there are £8 advances if you're not bothered about taking a latish train) and £1.90 for your tube fare, total £51.40.

Anytime tickets for the full journey would run to £84.20 single/£114.10 return with a stack of splits and awkward changes.

1727 SHF > BDM 1918 £26.00 ADV
1935 BDM > MKC 2049 £6.60 CDS (or X5 is £6.50 and takes ~40 mins)

Total £40.10

Is the X5 bus from St Neots to Milton Keynes an option?
There's East Coast advances from York to St Neots at 16:01 on Monday for £21.80, arriving into St Neots at 18:21.
You could then catch the ~18:38 X5, arriving in Central Milton Keynes at 20:05 (or MKC station at 20:10). I think the X5 costs between £5 and £10, but can't find any pricing information on the Stagecoach website.
