I have advance tickets from York - Middlesbrough, out 9 April, return 10 April, 2 adults and 1 child with Family Railcard.

Problem is we have the child with us on the way out but not now on the way back. What do I need to do?

Thanks in advance!

You need to have a child with you in order to make the railcard valid (see bottom of this post), therefore the tickets for the 10th April would no longer be valid if you do not have a child with you. You're going to need to buy new tickets for the 10th April, I would check TPE's website as there are probably still advance tickets there and depending on when you're traveling they might still be cheaper than the Off-peak day single at £11.00 (route not Darlington, one adult, no railcard).

Family & Friends T&C's said:
Eligibility

To use your Family & Friends Railcard, your group must contain at least one named cardholder and at least one child aged between 5 and 15 years. The maximum group size is up to four adults (aged 16 years and over) including the named cardholder(s), and four children (aged 5-15 years). Don’t forget children under five travel free and each adult may take up to two “under fives” with them.

Buy fresh tickets for the return trip - advances are still there on some trains, at a cheaper price (£8) than amendment fees for the original tickets

Ok, thanks. That's disappointing. I thought I might have been able to just pay for an excess.

You might, if you get a friendly booking clerk. But they are not supposed to offer it.

Ask at York station to excess the adult tickets. I did this successfully at King's Cross on AP tickets.

Some people say it shouldn't be done but I see no evidence of that, and it certainly can be done. If East Coast do it, it's probably right, as they seem to be the best TOC at excesses in my experience.
