It's a milepost I believe.
It's 8 miles from where the mileage starts (terminal station or a major junction usually) and the three dots make it 8 and 3/4 miles.
On the subject of these, I noticed some of the mileposts along the Chase Line have number '1's instead of dots or a more sensible 'I', it looks a bit messy really.

Some of the older mileposts are a little interesting. One of the Scottish pre grouping companies, it may have been the G&SW, though not sure used playing card suits as the quarter mile increments. For example, East Kilbride milepost shows clubs.

Did you see that around Hull somewhere because I remember seeing that I wondering what it was and I have a feeling it was whilst I was at Uni?
Ah well never mind then! In my defense it's a big railway and it's easy to get confused between bits of it

That's not to say there isn't one near Hull! Presumably there are at least 2 places nearby where an 8 3/4 sign could be placed!
True true but seeing as I've been past North Berwick junction several times in the last few months it could easily be that post!

Just for the record, one dot or stripe represents 1/4 mile or 20 chain or 400m or 440yd.Depending which currency you count in.

Mileposts vary in design and size. Older ones tend to be of whatever style the owning railway company decided upon. Some have different shapes for each incremental post, some different shaped heads. Some will only show the mileage on whole mileposts, with spots, stripes, numbers, fractions or bits sticking out of the top to indicate the quarter mileposts.
Modern posts tend to follow broadly the same styles, with the whole mileage over the top with the chainage underneath.
South of London extending into the suburbs on many lines, there are actually chainage discs every chain counting from one to eighty, any remaining mileposts sit at the 0, 20, 40 and 60 discs.
